need help fishing for gar?

How do you catch longnose gar. I see them all the time in the James and Chickahomany (i live in virginia) when i go fishing for bass, although i never catch any, but i have no idea what lures or baits to use for them. I have heard of tying on a piece of nylon rope, and using that, but have no idea how to do it. any advice you can give me is much appreciated.

I live in South Central Kansas, I was at the Kaw Lake dam on the Arkansas river just south of here some years ago and saw a man catching gar with brightly colored crappie jigs. He was having a lot of success and appeared to be a lot of fun as they get quite large around here (4 to 5 ft in length sometimes) Hope this helps.
