Need help finding new smart phone

Hi Everyone,

My Palm Treo Pro just died. It was a great phone, I loved how it synced with outlook and the tech support was great. I got it on advice from this forum that this phone would be the easiest way to go to get up and running with something that could sync with my computer for spreadsheets, contacts, and calendar.

Some people on here said that I should go with android, or some other open source platform that would have more options for other programs. That was an issue with the palm, it didn't have much in the way of programs, the the basics like a dictionary. So I am just checking in: has android or a different open source platform developed the software to syn with contacts and calendar? If so I will probably go there.

BTW I am looking for something in the 200$ range, unless it has an incredible warranty. actually i think i want something with a really good warranty anyways, it is a bummer to have this phone die on me after only a year of use.

What carrier are you going to go with? Need to know that first. From what I have read, the Android devices do not sync very well with Outllook. I think you can buy a 3rd part app (MissingSync or CompanionLink) that will make it so however.

Best sync with Outlook, IMHO, is the BB.
 
I don't have any particular carrier, anyone that takes a SIM card would be fine.

Also I would not mind, actually it might be nice, to switch to thundirbird, or another open source email/contact/calendar program. so long as i could import my contacts from outlook.
 
Not the right answer. You need to pick the cell carrier that has the best connection where you need it - where you work, live, travel and play. Not all GSM carriers have coverage in the same areas. If 3G is important then AT&T and T-Mo are on different 3 G freqs and they are not interchangeable with an unlock and a SIM card.

Outlook i by far the most supported PIM. I use T-Bird but sync contacts and calendar with Google since nothing really works with T-Bird, Zindus or Lightning.
 
Ah, google. Never thought of that, maybe i should switch to google, and android phones can sync with that?

Actually I don't hardly use my phone as a phone at all, every once in a while i will buy some txt messages for 5$ from at&t, but i don't like the idea of microwaves so close to the jewels. so really i am just looking for a pocket computer, phone is just a bonus.

on another note:
I just went to the computer repair place and they said that the only problem with my phone is the charger connection. Apparently, like laptops, this is what usually goes wrong with phones, pretty much planned obsolescence. He said that there were no smartphones that have a solid connector that won't go bad, only older phones and cheap phones apparently. He also said that it is hard to get parts for a repair from Palm. Very frustrating. Anyways, finding a phone from a company that provides parts for repairs would also be nice among my other considerations.
