Need Help Camping Advice.?

while camping in the fall I had an encounter with some animal while in the tent and did not know what to do. My girlfriend and I were in the same tent and heard noises outside in our camp we thought little of it and tried to sleep, later in the night we heard more noises except right outside out tent. We were very loud and tried scaring it of by yelling which did not work. At the time we called a friend who was not with us to get another voice and try to calm down but the noise continued and whatever it was brushed against our tent a few times. What would you do in this situation, we had no knife or anything and no flashlight (not very prepared I know) and debated to leave the tent to attempt to scare it off but the area we were in is know for mountain lions. What would you do?
