I'm an old man with no phone tech savvy, and no wish to acquire same.
I am computer literate, being a retired mainframe programmer and a PC addict since the first ones came out. The older I get, though, the less I feel like taking on the challenge of new technology, preferring it to work "out of the box." This although I used to live and breathe computers, enjoying staying up all night reading manuals and trying out systems.
So sue me, you might end up the same way.
What I, and no doubt millions of others of the same ilk, need is a good, cheap, cellphone for basic emergencies. Hour counts and long distance mean little as I rarely turn it on from month to month.
I need one for things like emergencies while driving or if I'm in the bathtub and can't get out, that sort of thing. Also, of course, for that occasional call when I can't get to a regular landline. Christ, I can't even change a flat anymore.
My eyes are still good, but I'd still have trouble with such a small monitor screen, so the Internet is out. The only perk I'd like, if possible, is a one-button "911."
Right now I pay Alltel $24 a month but wonder, since I rarely use it, if there is a cheaper monthly service.
From my understanding, unless it's changed since I last checked, phone cards aren't transferred over month to month, as well as in any emergency calling, I might need more minutes than remain on the card. Any emergency phone that wouldn't work in an emergency because of some technicality is useless.
There must be millions in my condition with similar needs.
Thanks for any advice you can give me, us.
Charlie
