I'm 17 about to be 18, and am graduating this month. I'm going on a trip to the beach for a week, and I want to update my clothes. I'm 5'4'', i have an hourglass shape, but i have a really long waist and shorter legs, thicker legs too. I weigh 127 pounds. My style goes toward vintage or vintage inspired, but I always have trouble finding any dresses or skirts to wear. For summer, I want to be able to wear alot or skirt and dresses. What are the types of dresses that would look good on me? And what skirts? Usually the stuff I get is to short, I guess because of my long upper torso, and then I feel like most of the skirts and stuff I find make my hips and legs look ALOT bigger. I'm not a huge fashion person, and we don't have alot of money, so mainly i have just worn jeans and nice shirts. i like shorts that are more out there, maybe with stripes or weird prints, but i don't know how to wear them with certain things. are there any rules that can help me? XD PLEASE! I need serious help.

Hey there!
I am 16. I think that any dress/skirt that clinches your waist would be good on you because it will virtually shorten your torso and highlight your waist. Here is an example of some: http://blog.urbanbehavior.com/style/in-demand-our-elastic-waist-dress/

If you are search for some vintage/vintage inspired dresses look for bright patterns. Here is am example: http://fashionurbia.com/retro-and-vintage-inspired-bow-adorned-dresses/

Here are some examples of printed skirts:

When finding stuff to wear with you skirt/dresses try to find pieces that will match multiple things in your wardrobe.
Stuff to pair with your skirts/dresses:
Blazers: http://browngirlgumbo.blogspot.com/2009/03/blazing-blazers-for-spring.html
Leggings:http://www.targetwoman.com/articles/leggings.html
Tights: http://iamfashion.blogspot.com/2008/12/fw08-fancy-tights.html
Cardigan: http://jahaute.blogspot.com/2008/11/chunky-womens-cardigans-must-this.html\
Flats: http://www.oohwee.net/2011/04/27/flats-popular-amongst-women-of-all-ages/
Heels: http://blog.al.com/if-the-shoe-fits/2009/03/wow_rocawear_heels_very_surpri.html

If you are a little self conscious about your thighs/hips try to avoid a line skirts look for a fuller skirt or take a risk in a bandage skirt (a tight skirt). If you find that the skirt/dress is short on you wear it with leggings of tights. when you are shopping aim for a longer skirt. If money is a little bit of a problem I would recommend shopping at stores like charlotees russe, target, khols, and JC pennys.

Delias has some vintage inspired clothing. They have some vintage dresses and some fun shorts.

Dresses that hit you below the bust and flows away from the body will create the illusion of londer legs. So look for dresses like that.

Good Luck!

from a fashion designer: for someone with an hourglass figure, i will always recommend garments that accentuate the waist. by showing off your tiny waist, you trick the eye into thinking that everything else is tiny also. as far as length goes, never do anything that is below the knee unless it's a maxi. this will ultimately give you a balloon shape. I would recommend a length of just above the knee because of your petit frame. Also, breaking up the silhouette with a belted or rouched waist line will make the upper body appear proportioned.
