Need data plan to sync calendar?

I'm interested in switching to either a Palm or Blackberry - the only functions I need to use are contacts, calendar, task list, etc. I am not interested in checking email or browsing the web. I want to be able to sync the calendar (and other things) between the Palm/Blackberry and my home computer. Why do I need a data plan to do this? Can't the two sync via bluetooth or something that doesn't need the data plan?
 
well you MUST have the data plan to have a blackberry on verizon (and really even if you had the choice not having a data plan with a BB is like having a car without gas). But most (if not all) PDA style phones can sync with your computer using a USB cable. If you want a wireless transfer you are pretty much stuck using a data plan. Verizon cripples most of its phones to prevent a bluetooth transfer even if the phone could support it. Verizon has great service, but they nickel and dime you to death. :flamemad:
 
Actually, I had a Blackberry 8703e on the $30/month data plan and wanted to switch to a Palm Treo, but they were going to require I upgrade to the $60/month data plan. They said I could not activate the Palm Treo without the data plan.

Would that possibly be different depending on where you go? I've had trouble with one of the stores not letting me do stuff, then when I go to another store, they do it - no questions.

I agree, it sucks that you can't just buy a smartphone without the data plan. I know of quite a few people that would appreciate the added functionality without needing to browse the internet or sync with their computers.
 
I just bought a Blackberry Curve with no data plan. The browser let's me access my Gmail account by browsing to m.google.com/mail using a wireless router as long as it is set for "Hotspot Browser" with no password needed. No luck browsing to the calendar yet so, I export the Google calendar to Outlook and sync Outlook with the phone. I can also do the same with my Gmail contacts. Don't really need the data plan. I am usually within range of a wireless router. :)
 
as of sept 6th att requires data plans on all new smartphones


AT&T has confirmed that starting Sept. 6 it will mandate that customers using a smartphone will have to subscribe to a data plan. That means no more using your iPhone just for making calls while appearing techno-savvy. AT&T said the vast majority of its smartphone customers already have data plans for email, mobile Web access and using applications. But it wants to bring the holdouts along to increase their own customer satisfaction by not having to worry about fluctuating phone bills. It also happens to fit with the wireless carrier's goal of boosting revenue by increasing mobile data usage.

Current customers who already have smartphones without data plans will be able to stick with their current plan. The AT&T data plan costs $30 a month and applies to iPhone, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, Symbian and Palm devices. --Mark Walsh
