Hi everyone. I've had GERD for about 12 yrs now. All started when I was pregnant w/ my son. I've taken meRAB for yrs now. I had to go back to the Dr today to get my MeRAB refilled. I'm on Nexium. 40 mg a day. Since I've had GERD for so long and i've never had any tests done my Dr suggested that I get an Endoscopy done to make sure that the GERD hasn't caused damage. I'm Really nervous about it! He said that they usually give you a valium or something to relax you and most of the time your so relaxed that you don't care what's going on. That is Exactly what I'll need. I was in the ICU almost 4 yrs ago due to a botched D&C and I was on life support for 2 of the 5 days I was there. I kept waking up while intubated! They couldn't keep me knocked out so I remeraber Very well that tube down my throat and feeling like I was suffocating etc.. Ever since I get Very panicy at the Dentist etc.. anything to do w/ my mouth or throat.

So What was ya'lls experience with your endoscopy? Thanks!!

Thanks! But from what my Dr said they wouldn't be knocking me out. He said that they'd give me Valium or something like that to relax me and do the procedure. He did say that most of the time people go to sleep they're so relaxed but I don't think they'd knock me out totally.

Hi,

As far as I am aware (I'm in the UK mind) there are three types of endoscopy I know about.

Thin fiber - goes up your nose and down your throat while your awake (had one of these this morning!) - I got an aneasthetic spray up my nose and it was ok.

There's a next one where you get a light anaesthetic or relaxant (sounRAB a bit like yours) - my dad has had a couple of these and says they're not too bad as you are usually relaxed/sedated enough not to worry/feel it too much.

Then the third is the rigid endoscopy - you get a full/general anaesthetic that knocks you out for 15 minutes while they do a full investigation (I've got one of these next week!).

Anyway, hope it goes ok for you,
best wishes.

I have just spoken to my ENT (had the nose one 4 weeks ago which I was worried about but was a doddle) and he is referring me for a GI. I too am a little nervous to say the least, one for the actual procedure and two for what they might find!

Had symtoms of burning, mucous etc since end of July.

Good luck everybody!!
