Need advice regarding a used TT

Hi everyone. I saw a listing on Ebay for a used Tungsten T for about US$ 115 . Apparently its an 18 months old PDA being sold because the user is upgrading to a TX. Considering that Tungsten T is around 5 years old model (144MHz processor, 14MB RAM ?) I was wondering if it is capable of running the present day apps? My main usage would be reading ebooks, to-do lists, listening to music and a little bit of gaming, in that order. Is it worth it or should I save up for an E2?

Also, are there any caveats I should watch out for in a used Palm device? Like dying batteries for example. Highly appreciate any advice ... its a student's-hard-earned 100$ so I'm kinda wary making online deals  .

As you said you are a student and are a bit tight on money which is understandable. With that said i'm guessing you're going to want a device that will last you for a long time to come yet.
Now the main problem with buying an older unit is the battery life. Because the unit is about 5 years old, the unit has probably been through many charge and discharge cycles causing the battery to wear out.

The other problem with used devices is the digitizer. Palm generally have very well made devices and the digitizer should last a long time but the digitizer has been commonly found to be the first thing to die or not work properly.

It's also known that devices with the 'slider' are more common to have a digitizer problem such as that found on the T3.

Other than the digitizer and the batter i don't think there's much of a problem with Palm and it should be able to handle your applications ok, but not great.

As far as your intended use, it should work just great for reading and for music as they both demand very little of the CPU. As far as games, it depends on the type of game but there are games made that work well on much slower Palms so at least some games should be no problem.

If the battery has never been replaced it is almost certain to be nearly worn out. Batteries have a limited life span even if they are not cycled a lot of times.

I would recommend getting a new device. Whenever you buy a second hand PDA on the internet, you have no idea what kind of condition it is in. Also, many times the person selling does not include the installation disk, which could be a big pain when trying to set up HotSync.

The E2 is a good device if you are on a tight budget. It has many of the same features as the TT, but with a faster CPU and more memory. I will admit the big screens on the T3, T5, and TX are great for reading, especially if you want landscape mode. However, the devices with big screens cost more. Good luck with your decision.

Thx a lot guys. That was some really helpful info (this place rokks :) ). Anyways, I asked this ebay guy if he could show me the device (which was not that tough since we were in the same city) but he acted sort of evasive so I dropped the whole idea. Guess I'll just have to save up and meanwhile continue reading ebooks on my 178x208, 2" screen smartphone :D Thx.
