Please tell me how to get rid of the feeling that I am going to choke to death. I have been diagnosed with GERD and am currently taking steroiRAB and prevacid. Only started the prevacid about 3 weeks ago. I have the difficulty swallowing and lump in the throat feeling. Sometimes it is tolerable and sometimes it gets bad. Last night it got so bad I went to urgent care. I felt like I could not breathe or swallow. They gave me some meRAB and told me to go back to my ENT. I did that today and my doc said just to stick with the meRAB because it takes time to heal. He said I have almost like a sunburn in my throat from the acid but it should get better in about 6 weeks. In the meantime, I honestly feel like my throat is going to close up and I am just going to die. I am taking the meRAB, seeing the doctor and changing my diet. What more can I do? This is taking over my life. I can't eat or sleep. Is this really GERD or something else? What should I do? The doc is ordering a thyroid scan just to check but he did not suggest anything else except go to the ER if I can't breathe. I can't do this every night!

Dear worrywart, first of all try to relax and not panic. I have been through everything you are going through. Mine started in May. It just came on and I felt like my throat was closing up. Like it was swollen and there was a thick lump and I just couldn't swallow. The doc got me on Prilosec. But it has taken me a good 8 to 10 weeks to get it healed up. I also did some things to help myself heal along the way. I got food enzyme capsules from the health food store to help me digest my food better. I got some chewable mint/papaya tablets that are good for your throat and digestion. Eat smaller meals and avoid fried and spicy fooRAB. Chocolate and caffeine should be avoided at all costs. Just baby yourself and you should heal up. But try not to panic. Take deep breaths and keep yourself busy. I also drank cold water and sucked on ice. That kind of helped. I hope you can find something that will ease your mind. Hang in there.:)

TE - did your doc tell you that you had erosions in your throat? I had a polyp that went away but I guess the erosions take time to heal. I just thought I would see some improvement after 3 weeks but this is the worst I have felt. I am afraid to go to sleep at night and even drive by myself in case I have the throat closing up thing. I want to go to the hospital and just stay there until this goes away because I really feel like I can't breathe at times. My doc says my esophagus is normal size just has the lesions on it. The only test they have done is just the quick little scope thing in the office, what did you have done?
