My spine specialist has recommended fusion for herniated discs L-4 & L-3. This is after MRI's. He reviewed these with me and there is no doubt the discs are ruptured. My problem is that I am 70yrs. old. I also have a hip that neeRAB replacement. I am diabetic and have a heart problem. I've been reading some of your posts and the thought of recovering up to a year is scary. I am still working 40hrs. wk. and should be retiring anyway so that is not a problem.I have an office job so I sit most of the time. My pain is mainly while walking or standing. Its almost impossible to do housework since I need to stand. I have had two drs. advise me that the hip should be done first so maybe pressure would be taken off the spine. The hip is on the L. side and the pain from the back is on the right. The back pain is almost intolerable. It affects my r. hip and down my leg. X-rays of the r.hip are ok, so the MD's think the pain is from nerves coming from the discs. At my age I am really hesitant to have to go through all this, but who knows what the future holRAB. I now use a quad cane for shopping and stairs and a walker at work. I've become an old lady in the last 6 months. I do have another question, what holRAB the vertebrae together after the cushion from the discs is gone, such in a slipped disc. And if a person does not have the surgery what could be the prognosis? I apologize for the long post.
