Need a new phone, but Apple doesn't make it yet.

I basically want a phone with these qualities/features.

1. Bluetooth
2. Mpeg-4 Playback
3. Sizable screen
4. Mp3/itunes support
5. memory expansion slot (flash, memory stick, mms, etc..)
6. Java capable
7. sturdy enough to be dropped (think nokia brick)
8. Decent battery life.

Edge and camera/video record capabilites are nice, but not neccessary. Same with Internet and PIM features.

Does anything exist out there like what I described?I currently have 3 Motorola v551's between my wife and I, only 1 works now. We are pretty rough on our phones,..they tend to get dropped a lot.

We also use the video playback capabilites of the v551's to entertain our 2 year old when we're stuck in traffic. Using quicktime, I compressed a bunch of Muppets and Sesame Street clips down to 3gpp. With only 5 megs of available storage, we can't keep much video on each phone, but it's always enough to make the boy stop crying (he loves Bert and Ernie).

Now our contract is set to expire and they are trying to corral me into a pair of new razrs with a new 2 year hitch (cingular). I'd rather hunt around for the model of phone that meets my needs rather than take what they want to force feed me, then buy it from a 3rd party on the cheap.

I recommend the w900i. It has all the feature you need (2MP Cam, Great Video Recording Compatibilites,Big Screen,Walkman featured Mp3 Player,Expandable Memory and etc) but the downside is that its pretty expensive at about 600 USD. If not that then go for the w810i. (which is similar in features but its alot smaller and has a smaller screen)

I like the notion of a 'walkman' phone replacing my ipod, which replaced my walkman

price tag is a bit pricey tho,..I cannot justify spending a cool grand on 2 phones, we spent all in all about $350 on the 3 v551's combined.

Perhaps they will come down in price,..

Also, unless T-Mobile coverage isn't great in your area (and you can always check on the PCC at T-Mobile's website), why not get the Samsung T809? I have it and it's a pretty good phone. It has most of the features you want, and the screen is BEAUTIFUL!! Plus, you'll be able to play cartoons for your two year old full screened. Only downside is the battery life isn't stellar. But it's a good phone, and a good option to at least consider.

Plus, I think you can get them at CompUSA for like $100 with rebates, so...

Since you are on Cingular, you will want a phone with 850. Thus the W810i is highly recommended. Or you can do the slighly cheaper Nokia 6682. You can get the unlocked version from CompUSA often for $400. The W810i just came out and is hovering around a higher price point that is likely to come down in a few weeks.

Get an Audiovox SMT-5600 or a T-Mobile SDA. Both have windows media player and a large beautiful screen for jon stewart playback. Plus your son won't try to bend them backwards to see if it jumps back.

Otherwise I support the T809 - very cool phone.
