Need a good smartphone to take to the UK...

I'm currently using a Sprint EVO but can't take that with me as it isn't GSM. I'd like to find a decent Android phone or Windows phone I can run Android to take with me to the UK. Need something I can root and has the appropriate frequencies for UK and US 3G service.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Any of the Nexus One will do. The USA T-Mo Androids like the Samsung Vibrant, MyTouch 3G, Slide, all support the Euro frequency (they have to support roaming on the T-Mobile Europe network as a requirement) but the AT&T ones will only go EDGE there. I don't know or not sure if the Samsung Fascinate has the European frequency. So far other web pages say the Captivate has 2100, but they're not factory pages. Its likely it may.

I have had no problems using 3G with my N97 NAM here in London. Likewise, 3G coverage has been excellent on both "3" and Vodafone networks despite not having 2100 coverage.

Outside of London it may be different though because I believe some carriers are predominately 2100 in certain areas.

Nope. Don't use the N97 NAM as proof 850 exists in Europe. The N97 NAM has triple band 3G and it does support the European 2100 out of the box. When you're in London, the N97 NAM simply connects with 2100 with the UK carriers.

I just fact checked that myself today and that is correct, N97 NAM is 850/1900/2100 3G. Also found out today hat most UK carriers use 2100 solely for 3G, something to keep in mind if buying a NAM phone.

In case anyone is wondering, an unlocked iphone 4Gs goes for ~?600-700...................ouch.

The phones4u near the flat I am staying at has the Iphone 4 without contract for ?700. Either way thats waaaay considering after taxes it will be over ?800.

Well I picked up an HTC Dream (Google G1) locally for $100 with original box and everything. Great condition. It has the 850/900/1800/1900 for talk and the 1700/2100 freqs that will cover 3G in the US and UK so all should be well.

My T-Mo UK sim is working fine in it.

I rooted it and put Android 2.2 on there with my wifi tether, google maps and email. I'm good to go now. Can't wait to get over there and cool off. Been hot in the south!!!!!
