Neat food prep tricks?

On a food TV program, the cook needed to halve a few dozen grapes. Sorry I
can't remember which show. Anyway, the grapes were put on the flat side
(bottom) of a plate. Then an opposing flat side down over the grapes. Then
with a knife he easily ran his knife straight through the grapes splitting
them in half.

An impressive food prep bit of magic, imho!!!

Got any food prep tricks up your sleeve???

Yes doing the same with the grape tomatoes. I saw Rachel Ray do it
with
2 plastic lids like coffee can lids.....The lip on the lids keeps the
'maters from
moving around. I frequently do it with no lids and just my hand
steadying them, and cutting between my hand and the cutting board I'm
working on. Saves lots of time. It's a great trick to know!!

Nan in DE,

Grape tomatoes dawned on me too soon after I posted!!!

I wouldn't be so daring to use my hand to hold them in place, but it
would save on clean up, if I didn't bleed to death in the process. ;)

Agreed. I do it on my chopping block, using a small poly cutting
board, around 6" x 8", as the top surface.

BTW, not everyone "gets it" like rfc'ers. When describing this method
to others, it's wise to tell them to remove the grapes or tomatoes
from the vines first... 8;)

Take an empty pre-baked pie shell and fill it with
a heaping mass of whipped cream from a can. In a
quick motion press firmly into Andy's face while
rotating the pie 1/4 turn. Thunderous applause.

I believe it was Chuck Hughes, "Chuck's Day Off" on the
Cooking Channel, the show in which he cooks for his knife
sharpener person.

I have no trouble cutting a grape or cherry tomato in half holding it with
my fingers. It sounds to me like you need a sharper knife. No danger there,
if you just straddle the fruit with thumb and forefinger and cut down the
middle, the knife isn't aimed at you and can't cut you. But if the knife is
not real sharp and starts to squash the fruit or slide off instead of
cutting then you'll get random interesting results. Just another example of
why it's safer and better to use a sharp knife at all times.

Yes, they're still made. Buy them at the hardware store.
