+1 Marlon. Yes the Brits have had a propensity for diabolical approaches to power generation! Those Deltecs with the off timed cranks were cool though. Very expensive to maintain and when they went bang it was a spectacular bang. A little water leak and the hydraulic lock would send parts everywhere according to an English friends dad who worked on them back in the day.

Had to smile about your backup units for blackouts. Having been to the DR at resorts many times I expected the daily power out. This year was the first time in 15 years that the resort didn't go down. You must be doing your job!
 
This design has been around since the 60's (that I know of anyway). Here in OZ there was a van sold way back then called a 'Commer', sort of a work delivery van. They were affectinately known as 'Knockers' because of the knocking sound the opposed cylinder engines made.

My personal all time favourite is the Radial aircraft engine....
 
lol...thanks...the EMDs are only part of the back up, we do have as well Deutz, Hyundai, Caterpillar, Cummins, Guascor, Volvo and Stewart Stevenson ...the good thing about them all is while they are all the time pre heated...just start and bring on load in no time before re start the Wartsila base load engines..
so you see i dont run a power plant...i call it a finca or farm with all the different brands and models we have and im forced to stock spares for around 7 Millon UD$ all the time
where did you stay at in DR?
 
Most of my experience was with marine diesels. We had a pair of 9 cylinder Nordbergs for main propulsion, 18X24 bore and stroke, and four Cleveland GM 8-268-A's running generators. All 2-strokes.
 
yep...marine Diesels are my life...the biggest we have here are 18 V 46 Wartsila Miller timed engines with 4000 Hp per cylinder doing a max output of 17.5 MW per engine..

i really do love the big two strokers like the Sulzer...what a monster engine...
 
Resorts primarily on the north coast from Punta Cana to Puerto Plata. Since you have the power under control, now start working on the water supply. Perhaps 100 people including myself were waaay sick with the shits at the resort this year. I lived on Imodium for 4 days.

Sounds like an uber fun job. Hire me! And +1 on keeping the heat in them. Almost eliminates expansion coolant links and you can feed them the load in under a minute.
 
sorry to hear about the water thing but i think the resorts are serving only bottled water...
4 days of Immodium...sounds like you guys coulnd stay too far away from a restroom...i call it a complete system discharge...
for hiring i would need an updated CV..we do have a very international crew working here...
 
They had to be washing veggies with tap water or perhaps mixing concentrated fruit juices with it. There were just too many people sickend for it to be a few isolated cases. Heck, there was an ambulance onsite for a day to transport people to the hospital. Guess I won't be going to that resort again. Besides, the NH Real Arena resort was totally boring.
