Near Dark

I'd never seen this film before but I thought it was quite good :) Interesting take on the vampire genre.
I have a question about the ending -
At the end the boy's father gives the girl a blood transfusion to make her well again and she can see in sunlight. Does this mean she's a mortal human now or is she still a vampire?

What's kinda interesting is that after the first meeting the boy isn't like
"You're a vampire?!?! You bit me!... HOLY SHIT!!!..." and try to get away, he just goes "Ow" a bit.
Maybe its a bit like Let The Right One In,
in Near Dark I didnt think May was actually EVIL.

Great film, I've been raving about it for years to anyone who will listen.

FigerLicking Good:D

Great soundtrack, great cinematography, good story. Can't stand the way it's been overlooked and all this shite Twilight rubbish gets all the publicity.

As for the ending, I think the theme of the film was that there was nothing mystical or other worldly about being a vampire. It was akin to drug addiction and so May was able to be cured.

You're right Speak-Softly.
Vampirism in Near Dark is an infection of sorts to be treated. Considering that Caleb goes against his Dad and gets into trouble the film could be interpreted as chastising rebellious youth with vampirism a metaphor for STRAB - not all that different from Twilight after all.
Great film though. Glad the remake got canned.

Good to hear about the mooted re-imagining being canned before I knew a remake was on the carRAB. No need to sully the legacy of this cult hit.

Does everybody know that it was directed by Kathryn Bigelow who won the oscar for The Hurt Locker?

I'm sure you probably do, but I only found out recently so thought I'd post it just in case.:o

Great movie, great performances, great director. A triple whammy! The Aliens team of Hendrikesen, Paxton and GolRABtein just gel so well. Pasdar is excellent too. I think I wore my video copy out over the last 20 or so years, so I highly recommend the DVD especially the making of which sees Pasdar's plea for the elusive Jenny Wright to get in touch, quite touching. By the way- go onto YouTube and type in Martini Ranch - Reach (a great 80's song). There you'll find Bill Paxton's band in a video starring Paxton ('natch), Hendrikesen, Pasdar and GolRABtein with a cameo from Kathryn Bigalow in the only music video ever directed by James Cameron!
