name of 80's-90's arcade game, shooter with level up weapons?

i'm trying to remember an arcade game i played as a kid. It was a plane shooter, coin-op arcade, where you played an airplane, and you could level up your weapons by flying over these pods and they would increase in number starting with 1, and going up to i believe 8. the higher the number, the better the weapon upgrade. any thoughts? thanks!
