Nail polish smells like pear drops? What?

I was watching a movie today based off of a novel by Agatha Christie, and the character Poirot compared the smell of nail polish to pear drops. I found out that pear drops are a kind of British candy... (I think, I'm not sure) but I don't understand how the smell of nail polish could ever be compared to the smell of a candy. Unless pear drops smell very gross. Could anybody explain this to me? :S
 
Acetate is in nail polish and also in pear drops. I wonder then if pear drops are bad for our health?
