Nacho Libre

It's a strange film. The script is full of such wide open spaces that the cast are left staring at the camera, with nothing to do. Why aren't there any jokes? Why do so many scenes just happen, with no narrative thread?

Nonetheless it's funny, Jack Black is excellent, and the ending is curiously satisfying. It just seems like so much effort went into making it look authentically Latin American (and it does look fantastic) that they forgot to write a script.

I went to see Nacho Libre last night and thought it was a funny film but just not as funny as I thought it would be!
I can see how it wouldnt be to everybody taste though!

It's from Jared Hess (director of Napoleon Dynamite) so expect it to be a cross between Jack Black's in your face stuff and Jared Hess' highly subtle dry style.

Loved it, it had all the quirky elements of Napoleon Dynamite and even more surreal stuff. Jack Black's accent and facial expressions were great, and the fights were well done (especially the scary midgets).

Even though it was a 12A the scene with the sweetcorn in the eye was quite gruesome, especially as there were some kiRAB of about five in the audience when I saw it

This was on last night on E4, though I have it on DVD. I have to say I think it's absolutely brilliant. It's a rare thing for me to find a comedy these days actually funny. Admittedly it's a film that you'll either love or hate, but like Dynamite before it I loved it, though when I first saw the trailers for it I thought it would be crap!

I'm a sucker for Jack Black's singing though. I love the whole party scene in this! Makes me giggle every time. The flourishes he puts on it senRAB me into fits. The nice thing about this film though is that, like Napoleon Dynamite it's actually quite easily paced for a comedy, and has a lot of sweet moments.

Any fans?

You know what? I think I agree with you. I'm a massive fan of Jack Black, but I think this one might be my favourite. It's just a brilliantly funny film. Ended up watching it yet again on DVD last night. It's been ages since I've had consecutive viewings of any film. It just hits all the right buttons as a comedy.

I gather there's talk of a sequel. While I suppose I would be really up for seeing it, I kinda don't want it to taint the original. Then again, as long as we get more of Black's brilliant singing I'm in!
