N95 Map download -- 12 hrs ?!?!?!?!?!?!

Help!!! Why is it taking 12 hrs (and still running at 85%) to download 3-state Map into my N95? It's only 132 MB. Is this normal ? I'm worried if something's wrong. I'm using Map Loader.

Another thing, anyone know the cost for the extra service here in the US ? You know...for the GPS with the turn-by-turn guide, voice guide, etc...

THANKS in advance!!

Nokia HAS to do something about that website. The Map loader is atrociously slow. I'd do only 1 map at a time.
You'll get the price for voice turn by turn add-on when you request that info on the phone itself.

FYI: the tracking mode (follows you on the planned route) works great, like using a map that plots where you are in relation to the indicated route.

I agree its stupid...however, I believe this is the reasoning.

I believe each map is like 20,000 files or something..Now, the maploader is updating the memory card while downloading each file. Because there are so many files, it has to start stop start stop etc....

That is probably why it's slow.

Yeah, that is stupid.
Tomtom map folder have like, 20 files max in them.
I can't wait until 3rd-party apps gain access to the onboard GPS.

It's crazy! now 14 hrs later, the countdown timer is actually counting up!!! Just making sure, if I cancelled the download, it would delete everything, yes? And not store anything in the folder/cache/whatever it's storing the maps to.
[BTW, where are the maps stored?]

Thanks again people...and Alan!

You're welcome. As worldIRC stated, let it finish. You're almost there. Not sure the folder that it saves to, but was advised that it will be deleted when you uninstall the program.

I had downloaded a few maps, one by one few days ago... I had 3 complete maps. Last night, I started to download 3 maps together, it's over 150MB in total. I stopped the process since it indicated that it requires over 70 hours. But the 150MB is disappearred... if I download the same maps again, it use additional memory, MapLoader only gives me the options to clear all maps. Is there anyway I could free up the memory? It should not take up the memory since I stopped in the middle of the process...
I would prefer not to clear all, since I have to download all 3 complete maps again...

Load one map, move all the Private folder onto your computer hard drive and ZIP/RAR it.

Load another map (with the EMPTY memory card), rinse and repeat.

Each ZIP/RAR is named by the map you transfer.

You can then extract the files on your memory card when you need it (winrar allows to extract into the specific folders without overwriting).

I never tried this though

Known issue. Also I found out that the way the software formats the maps on your memory card in my case 180MB of maps came to about 500MB. See this thread for more detailed info on this

It is ENTIRELY because of the cluster size that your smart2go maps will take a lot more space than it should.

For one map, there are about 9,140 files!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
1 files will take 1 cluster MINIMUM, even if the file is smaller than the cluster.

File = 1kb
Cluster = 6kb

Space taken by file = 6kb

This is what a 24mb map with 9,140 files took on my memory card & PC.

24mb map, 9,140 files

Memory card
Space taken : 38mb
Cluster size : 2kb

Hard Drive PC
Space taken : 598mb
Cluster size : 65.5kb

My solution is to format your memory card with a tiny cluster size.

make sure to have the power adapter plugged in. i did this and my phone was dead in the morning so my alarm didnt come on and i was an hour late to work

yes. i was too...if you leave your phone plugged into the usb port all night with maploader sending the map to your phone it will run out of battery by morning. i had my phone fully charged at 10pm, left it overnight to download the map, woke up at 7am becuase the battery had died and alarm didnt come off. didnt have time to charge it so i had no phone until i got home from work later that day.

CR*P!!! You're right...I didn't check it this morning, the batt's dead. I cancelled the dl. Now I gotta start over again, 1 map at a time. And make sure my memory card is clear too...THANKS people!!!

Well...here's an update. First of all, I apologize for the seemingly "dumb" thread. I think what happened was, like chopsu3i said, my N95 went dead after sitting over night trying to download the maps. So last night I did it like ArLequin said, download the map 1 at a time while plugging the power cord on. It did it a few minutes. I still wouldn't suggest to download maps altogether.

Thanks people!
All in all...it's a great device!
