N80ie after a week

I have had my N80ie for about a week or so, I think if I had to do it, I'd still get this phone, I do really like the Gizmo over wifi (when it works) and Fring, the apps are solid, the camera is not too bad in good light condition, and lack of auto-focus can be compensated if you hold the camera still for 2-3 second after taking a picture.

Couple of things on the negative side:

- Battery power (it's really bad), I bought a desktop charger and two extra batteries to have around just in case, also I am constantly charging it in my car (car charger is a must), I prefer the iGo car chargers, because you can buy an end tip for the different phones (beats buying multiple car phone chargers), you just buy different tips for the different models. But they should have allowed for extended batteries for the phone.

- Slider unlocking the keypad on N80: There are ways to do this supposedly, set a security pass code or install a third party app (which I have not done)

- Flash seems to be useless in low light condition.

- Small screen (but high resolution), I just wish the screen was a bit bigger, but the resolution is pretty nice.

I think if N73 had a Dpad and wifi, I'd get that instead, but overall I seem happy with the N80ie, no phone is perfect, and it's a trade off really.

For the power consumption, I have done some tweaks, I saw in symbian forums, but they don't see to do much, but here they're:

- I changed the Tx power for wireless from 100mw to 4mw
- Changed Network to GSM only
- I usually look in task list to see if I have any app running in background (press and hold menu and kill them)

These are couple other things I have seen I might do in mine:
1. Disable WLAN Wizard & stopping the phone searching for new LAN every x minutes.
2. Changing the wireless settings from auto to manual

The camera is shocking!!! So is the battery life. Those are BIG gripes. I may have gotten used to charging my phone every evening now but it is not the way it should be, the battery life is totally useless if you want to use your phone for any normal amount of time or for anything other than looking at it. I also don't have a tripod handy for the phone, as it clearly needs one in order to take a photo that isn't blurry. I also don't like having to hold the camera still for a minute while it decides when it's going to take the actual photo.

Enough sarcasm! Maybe the N95 will be better, or maybe I'll just move onto a PDA ... hmmm...

How far through a day do you get w/ the battery? Are you breaking in your battery properly? I was reading that you should charge you battery for 12 hours straight and then run it down till it's empty for the first five or so charges. Not sure if works but another poster said it helped.

yeah i also just got the n80ie and overall im happy with it, just the battery is really a killer. although the other day i got through 2 days without having to charge it. and the camera is nowhere near as bad as some make it out to be. also a bigger screen would of been nice. ergonomically i think the phone is fantastic.

This is a HUGE one. The wifi radio is a battery hog and a half, so if you have is scan in the background for hotspots for ANY amount of interval, it'll be a huge drain on battery life. Turn this setting off, and have all your applications that use access points set to "Always ask" so you can manually scan for wifi access points only when you need them. You should greatly improve battery life (though it still doesn't do as well as other phones).

There are several freeware applications for locking the slide automatically. They should be able to fix your problems.

Solex00: I don't break it, I usually charge when it gets to 2 bars or so, but I don't overcharge (I have no idea what's the best method to tell the truth)

pinksteady: since N80 has wifi and camera, I wanted something that had everything + wifi, if wifi was not important for me, I'd get the N73. N95 would be nice, but it's a bit pricey.

JonnyBruha: I agree, but I still don't understand why Nokia did not make an extended phone for this, they could have made a battery cover + extended battery (as some PDA's or other phones do), for some reason I think Nokia builds their phone to be as a luxury item (to be used sporadically) as opposed to 24/7 like we all do.

TheTruth: There are some PDA's that do, and the new Samsung F700 will for sure... check gsmarena (the phone finder)

Overall I am pretty happy, battery _is_ a problem, but again with extra batteries, extra chargers, this is ok I guess. I think once rotateme is released, the screen will look nicer
used on the landscape... and I can't wait for smart2go to be released.
