N80 - yay or nay?

I know I can read the tons of threads that are available on the N80

Just need a small spot-poll on the device

I am considering getting an N80 from importgsm.
I know that the N95 (drooooool) is coming out "soon" but I generally do not need the GPS (have a hardware GPS unit), dont care about the 2 extra Megapixels in the camera, and I dont care about the dedicated music controls in the N95.

Is there any reason that I should not get the N80 and wait for the N95?

The N80 is a decent bit thicker. The N95 is 21mm thick and the N80 is 26mm. Thats actually what kept me from the N80, and then the N95 fixed that. Its too early to tell yet, but hopefully the N95 has better battery life than the N80.

Other than that, go for it. I think I am going to go with an N73 for now and the hopefully an N95 in March-ish.

Oh yeah, ALOT more RAM in the N95. 40MB in the N80 compared to 160MB in the N95. That should be far more than enough to solve all of the running out of memory problems which are common in S60 phones

The N80 is great if you don't mind the camera being less than perfect (if you can stand still for 5 seconds, it takes pretty good shots. That's the problem, also, though.). Wifi, imo, at this point in the game is next to useless. I say that having unlimited data on my plan, but the things I would expect to be able to do with wifi on my phone, i cannot.

1. browse my shared folders on my computer via the phone
2. stream music from the computer to the phone (not vice versa)

Until those capabilities are available, wifi is a novelty to me.

The N73 is the next best thing, the camera is killer, but it's not as sexy, and doesn't have wifi, if you don't have unlimited data.

If I could get the camera of the N73 on the N80, I'd go back to it in a HEARTBEAT. Take a look at the review in my sig for some shots taken with the n80. the recent pics on my textamerica site are from my n73.

Here's my thing with the N95:

1. I'm just not a fan of that menu/clear button setup that they're putting on some of these s60 phones. I like the end/send and softkeys set apart, and the keypad surrounded by the others.

2. The N80 and N73, quite honestly, I shouldn't have bought, being that I blow through data like no other and live in one of Cingular's 3G areas. However, there weren't really many other options. Given that their 3G is MUCH more laid-out and robust, I don't think it's wise (even given the average length of time that we on HoFo typically keep a phone) to buy a non-us 3g phone anymore. I'll keep the N73 until either the N75 (depending on several factors) or the next us-3g s60 phone comes out.

I agree with JonnyBruha, my friend Marcus was so excited when he first showed me his N80. Little did I know he was just doing it so he would not feel kinda of dumb since he has to take his plug to work so the phone lasts him the entire day.

You will read here a lot of users claim that the battery life is "fine." But that is only because they do not use the phone that much, or most of its features throughout the day. Well, duh... than why bother to blow so much money then?

As I said, great on paper, too bad they slapped a puny 820 mAh to it. What an outright joke. My BL-6C has 1070 mAh running on my 6620 (read: a slower, less power hungry phone) and sometimes if I use the MP3 player, do some surfing and calls, I will kill it before the day is over, easy. Now, in the real world, how long does anyone wager 820 mAh will last on a more power demanding unit while surfing, Wifi(!) and calls?

LOL
I am sure I can use the GPS thing somewhere
This will be my first new phone in 2 years, so I am thinking hard about it.
Buy N80 now (and sell my T68, P800 and Nokia 7190 at a higher price)
or
Buy N93 later (and sell the above phone at lower prices since they devaluate )

On the one hand I want to get a device now, but on the other I dont want to be frustrated by my purchase

If you don't want to use your phone for GPS navigation, I'd say go for the N80. I believe the overall impression about it has changed with the new firmware versions. You can update your firmware using Nokia Software updater or over the air. If you really want GPS, you can add this feature later with Nokia LD-1W or LD-3W GPS modules. N80 is a mature phone now. N95 will have lots of bugs in the beginning. Probably it would be best to buy it one year from now or so, when new firmware versions will be available to fix the initial bugs.

I don't know why Nokia haven't licensed Sony's Li-Poly battery technology, rather than soldiering on with cruddy old Li-ion.
SE batteries last for DAYS on end.

Dont buy the N80 for the camera. Its not so much a point and shoot camera. Ive taken better pictures with my V3i. Maybe I just have to play around with the settings more.

As for battery life, you really have to train the battery. First month or so, it would last 2 days with few hours of use(2 hours at the most). Ive had mine for a month and the battery lasts 3 days no problem.

I sold my d&g v3i to buy a nokia n80 and i'm glad i did, i know there are issues with the battery but a portable pc, what do u expect, i have tomtom navigator 6 on mine and use it daily, have to charge it everyday, yeah it is quite thick and not a fone u can easly slip in and out your pocket (jeans) the camera is quite disapointing i expected much better pictures but i hardly use the camera anyway so this is not a major issue to me.

This fone works like a dream apart from those minor issues and i would recommend it to anyone wanting an all round good performing fone.

So my answer is YaY!!

Im trying to decide on the same thing. I've convinced myself to wait a couple of months before buying an N80. I want the bugs to fixed before jumping the wagon. Is it safe to say that most of the problems are fixed? except the battery problem, I buy extra batteries anyway..

I'd say yah. Never had any problems with my N80 and if you restrict using the camera to brightly lit areas then it's not that bad. Not had any memory problems either. It's not as big (i.e. thick) as you think.

RCADDEN - have you tried ORB? With that I am able to browse files off my home computer and view pictures, music and movies off it on my phone using WiFi (or GPRS if your plan permits)

Lithium polymer batteries are more malleable when compared to regular lithium ion; which is why you can get thinner batteries, but not necessarily a longer batter life.
*SE batteries last longer due to the OS rather than battery technology.
*Newer s60 such as the N73 or N92 come with lithium-polymer batteries.

N80 is, imo, the sexiest phone Nokia has out right now. I only got rid of mine for the camera quality of the N73. the n80, as hinted at before, isn't point-and-shoot. it's point, shoot, hold for 2 seconds, done. if you can remember that, you're golden. Battery life, imo, wasn't as bad as people make it out to be. i could easily get through a day, which is no different than I did with my 6682, and I'm no light user. WiFi will kill the battery, but then again, what do you expect? It does the same thing to a laptop battery. I found the N80 to be incredibly smaller than I thought it would be.

Not sure why, but I personally am not impressed with the N95. Sure the features are killer, but it's going to be a pricey one, and I'm just not attracted to it. The N80 is freakin sexy, and the N73 will be once I get the Music Edition housing. Guess I'm just not a fan of the d-pad and menu keys setup like the N95 has, I don't know.

If you're going to wait for the N95, sell what you've got and pick up something cheap to use as a backup later (6030 or something)
