Hey does anyone know how to unlock the umts band for the n80. It sucks that since cingular did not approve the phone they will not allow customers to use it in the U.S. with the umts 3g band. If anyone knows how to unlock please let me know. Thanks.

Hi, 2 things:

- Please post accordingly in the appropriate forum that matching the subject of yours. In this case, the Series 60 SmartPhones http://www.howardforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=177 will do but not the Nokia wallpaper / theme.

- In US, the "band" for WCDMA/UMTS service is DIFFERENT from the rest of the world AND N80 ONLY operates the WCDMA/UMTS on 2100MHz. It's nothing to do with doing something in the firmware or "unlock the potential" because it lacks the actual hardware for WCDMA/UMTS on 850/1900MHz. Also, don't think that N80 is a "Quadband GSM + WiFi" will turns it into a "Multiband WCDMA/UMTS" capable phone too.

Sure, I should rephrase it. N80 operates the GSM on 4 bands. However, it can only operate the WCDMA/UMTS on 2100MHz. Many people think that the N80's RF baseband components are "Quadband" GSM capable, so there would be a possibility to unlock the "potential" with WCDMA/UMTS on "other bands" as well. Well, I wish Nokia would make phones like that too but it isn't.

There is an ongoing thread on this subject here.

I think the confusion came about because the phone was originally marketed by Nokia using the term "1900 or 2100 MHz WCDMA." I don't think this ever meant "1900 and 2100". If so, they most likely would have have described it as 1900/2100 WCDMA, just like they describe it as 850/900/1800/1900 GSM. I think the 1900 WCDMA was going to be the Cingular model which never hit the market.
