N80 OWNERS, do you still like it?

I think the n80 is something that really has all my needs but the price is killing me. I'm trying to look for it in the mid 200s to 300 range. I called a phone shop or two in my area and they said even if I signed up with a plan it would be like 589 or something. But am I just looking for a pipe dream?

That may be the smart way to do it. After flashing the firmware myself and seeing no change in the camera/video quality, I'm convinced that new firmware won't help. With luck, they'll change the hardware and you can get one of those N80s instead.

Please don't clutter this thread with noob questions and whatnot, there are plenty other threads for that. I want to know if those of us who bought the phone, and have used it for a while now, still love/like it? I'll confess, I'm currently considering going back to my 6682 for a little while. Really I find that the camera, while video is amazing (to me, compared to the 6682), still pictures are, imo, worse than the 6682. not sure how this can be, neither has autofocus. Perhaps I just need to play with it a bit more. Also the lack of programs is killing me. Also the lack of a program or any apparent assistance from Nokia to create your own programs is killin me. I like so many things about it, just don't know if it's worth the price tag for now. I honestly don't use Wi-Fi at all, mainly cause there's no killer apps for it. I mean, think about it, the possibilities are *endless* for this, file transfers, etc., specially with UPnP. Where's the support?

the phone is great feature wise and it's rock solid in terms of stability, but the battery life is turning out to be the deal breaker. I start using the phone at around 8am. I use my phone heavily. about 30 minutes of phone calling per day. heavy amounts of data exchange (for exchange server active sync) over EDGE. I don't use wifi or bluetooth at all. Yet by around 4pm the battery is shot. having to switch batteries is a real hassle.

Can anyone tell me why anyone in their right minds wouldn't put autofocus on this kind of Camera? I could definitely understand if it was a full SLR camera or something. It just doesn't make sense to me.

It's been a tough decision for me - I have been waiting for the arrival of the N80 for some months, and although still had a month or two left on my existing contract, decided to bite the bullet and go for the N80 on a new contract.

There is so much to love about the N80 - but there was also a lot of things that drove me mad..

1 - I found simple things like creating a new message annoying: the screen would blank, then load the main messaging window, blank, then load the new SMS screen...

2 - I found that it was far to easy to exit an application by mistake.. This was especially annoying in writing an SMS - you would navigate the text message using the cursor, by pressing right, you could accidentally press the right 'soft key' (which is far to easy to do) which is set to close/exit..

3 - The camera quality was just shocking - 50% of my pictures were either blurry or out of focus - there was such a bad shutter lag that I had to hold the camera still for a couple of seconds after the picture was taken.. (I think after reading other posts that I may just have a duff handset as other pictures appear to be fine)

4 - Battery life sucks, mine barely lasted a day with moderate use...

5 - The slide mechanism was far to easy to open in your pocket.

6 - The usual 'Out of Memory' errors... (OK I know that there is a firmware upgrade - I didn't want to invalidate my 14 money back guarantee with Orange, so didn't apply)

The handset has a lot of potential - I was really looking forward to getting it - I like the WiFi access (probably more of a gimmick than any real use), LifeBlog was fun, the Video quality was just amazing!! but overall I have to say that I was a little dis-hearted with it..

It was a tough decision, the camera was the deciding factor that made me return it... I want a phone with auto-focus - the K800 does appeal, but I like the functionality of the S60 devices... so I might hold out for the n73 when that comes out...

I'll admit I only skimmed through the thread, and didn't read every post
But I will add this is maybe an unfair question - or well, i guess it depends what your previous phone before the N80 was. For people coming out of a more recent S60 phone - it might be hard to see the advantage of the N80.

The OP is a perfect example.. He's coming from a recent S60 phone, with a good camera, decent video, lots of support as far as apps and software goes. So he doesn't see much advantage to the N80 - he see's more of the disadvantages. Where if you were upgrading from lets say a 3650 I think you'd be in love with the N80 and could live with whatever short comings it has.

Take me for instance... If I were to get an N80, coming from an N90 - I would ONLY see disadvantages. It only offers 2 things more than my phone. Lower quality 3mp camera/video than my 2mp camera/video. And wifi, which I'm still not on the wifi bandwagon - I just don't see enough advantage to wifi in my lifestyle... besides I have unlimited tzones edge in my area and I'm sure thats one of the reasons.

I think the N80 is a good phone - not having used one, I can say that I do however read many of the threads and see/hear about the problems with this handset and I must admit, I'm glad I didn't buy one. but again, coming from a newer phone its easy for me to say that.

nechbi well thought out answer.

ive also shifted n80 back to being my secondary fone ... wont sell it off just yet. will wait for next round of firmwares. back to 9300 i go for now

Damn, is the camera really that bad? or is it just that some people here want the camera to be perfect?

Im planning on buying a N80, so is it really not worth buying just because of the camera? Or should i still get it b/c for me the camera isnt really a big deal

avs camera still takes great pictures.....some people are just picky..

if camera is not a big deal for you ..then still get it

only thing lacking of this camera is auto focus

Thanks for the link above, but one question. Which firmware do I want. There are two seperate files with subdirectories. Which one do I want? (I'm in the U.S.)
