N73 ME - Cingular or T-Mobile?

Hopefully this is the right area for this question, but I am interested in a N73 Music Edition, and I currently use T-Mobile, not under contract. I think I have 600 whenever minutes, and free weekends only. Also 1000 text messages/month. Its about $50/mo right now. I have heard that the N73 cant do picture messaging on Cingular, is that accurate?

Basically I want to weigh my options. I know the 850 band where I am at (San Fran/Silicon Valley) is supposed to be good, so that is one plus for Cingular. I just want to make sure I can take full advantage of this phone if I do signup for Cingular. I believe with a 2yr commitment, the phone is around $300 which is a decent deal. I look to you guys to tell me what the pros/cons are to signing up with either carrier.

Thanks!

The only difference between signing with either carrier is the coverage of that carrier in your area. The phone has all of the bands for either, so you should get good reception from the phone's end, at least. I haven't heard any rumors about not being able to receive picture messages on either carrier. I'm sure they should both work with appropriate settings for either carrier.

huh?

So your saying that when someone receives a message with this phone, they wont have the option to view the image in full screen mode nor would they be able to zoom in on it?

Anybody have a clue on why this would be. Why such a dis-advantage for such a high end phone?

cingular reduces the size of the picture on their side. i've sent mms that are like 46k to myself and when i receive them the pics are shrunken to like 5k. you can look at the objects in the message and zoom if you like. but it'll like like crap.

Im home in Boston for the holidays, and would really like to pick up this phone. Does anyone know of any good import shops around here that would have it?

Cingular's MMS system checks the IMEI of the receiving phone to see what size picture (and other attachments) it's capable of. If the IMEI isn't a Cingular one (I.e. unbranded phone) then it throttles it way down, just in case. It will also completely remove any video or audio clips. So using MMS you can ONLY receive a pic with Cingular and an unbranded phone, and the pic you receive will be super small.

It has nothing to do with the specific phone, it's just any unbranded device on Cingular's network.

Other than that, the phone will work fine on either network.

Thanks for the informative post Rcadden -- I really like the feature set with the N73, but am wondering if I should just hold off for the N75 (when is that coming anyways??) on Cingular. The N73ME is a pain to find in brick and mortar stores from my experience. I just dont want to wait forever for a new phone. There is always macworld too -- maybe the phone from apple will be out then? I guess I can hold off another couple weeks

Quite honestly I'd give it till the Superbowl (about 3-4 weeks) and see what's out. That should cover CES and Macworld, and give you a slightly better picture of what's out there.

The ONLY thing that the N75 is going to have over the N73 is 3G data. Other than that, the N73 is better in every way.

You can get the ME easily online, I bought my N80 from cti-miami on Ebay, and my regular N73 from HI-mobile.net. Both are highly recommended.

ya - probably a good bet, i have seen alot of ppl on this forum jumping ship from cingular. ive been with t-mob since they were voicestream.. over 10yrs now. they have been pretty good to me. i also dont like the idea of cingular restricting MMS for me. it seems there is more freedom with t-mobile, although i wish they allowed 850 roaming in sunnyvale and sf.

does anyone know what the deal is with the availablilty of the N73ME? I would sign up for a contract if it saves me considerable $, but noone seems to have them. And the ones on ebay seem a bit over priced. One of the dealers told me that Nokia isnt sending them out, as they are out of stock. Also I see that hi-mobile is out of stock..
