N73 in Japan should be unlockable?

Ok - I'm kind of confused.

Sharp 904's are not-unlockable anywhere in the world. You can't unlock them. And you can't buy them unlocked.

But I see N73's unlocked for sale all over the place. But then people tell me the N73's on sale in Japan now, are not-unlockable.

So can someone please explain the difference? How can there be some locked and some unlocked N73's - yet all 904's are not unlockable. Do you catch my drift? Or are you as confused as me?

N73s can be unlocked. You just need to contact the service provider who supplied the phone and pay them whatever they are asking for the unlock code.

that will be the smartest choice~

i dont think there will ever be any solution to unlock s60v3 except for the solutions mentioned above

I'm in Japan so:

-supposedly there is no way Softbank will provide the unlock code
-I can get the phone for next to nothing as I am an existing customer, which is why I don't buy the unlocked version online (unless I really have to)

You think Nokia will provide me with the unlock code? I hope so but kinda doubt it.

The Vodafone 3rd edition devices in Japan are definitely unique in that you can't install unsigned 3rd party apps - period. In all other 3rd edition devices you can still install the application, however some features will be limited if it is not signed. I'm sure Vodafone Japan has also made it impossible to unlock branded N73's as well. The operators hold a lot of sway over the device manufacturers, especially operators the size of Voda.

Yes I know - but in Japan, things work a bit differently.

Some unlock shops have been shut down and people have been arrested. And Softbank (formerly Vodafone) will NOT give out the unlock codes for any reason at all.

So am just wondering if they lock these the same way they lock the Sharps (904 etc.) or if this is an easier thing to crack. Not to mention - if anyone is even going to bother trying to figure out the unlock.

Arghhhh!!

Hmmm.....ok. I guess I'll just buy one, use it in Japan while I'm here, and hope Softbank changes their minds and starts letting people unlock their phones once the contract is up. Have heard rumours such a thing might just happen! But I'm not holding my breath!
