n73 drops calls, loses network

I've been having issues with my n73 lately. Whenever I make or receive a call I will get 1-2 minutes of talk time before the call will drop. Looking at the signal indicator, it will go from full to empty over the next 5 seconds or so. Then I lose the operator name (T-Mobile) and the connection indicator will switch from the normal antenna symbol to "3g".

I will be stuck in this apparently operater-less state for the next several hours before my phone will suddenly spring back to life. This has been happening for the past several weeks.

I've made sure my phone has the latest firmware and it didn't help at all. I also confirmed with T-Mobile that they haven't been having any outages in the area. I tried switching the operator selection to manual to see if maybe it was just refusing to roam or something but that just tells me that no operator can be found.

Does anything seem likely here? I've been wracking my brain and can't come up with something but I'd love any ideas you can come up with.

Is that the *#7370# reset? I just tried it with no luck.

Nope, SIM contacts are fine.

I managed to track down my old moto and popped the SIM card into it and it is also unable to get a signal so I think the n73 is off the hook as far as blame goes. Thanks for the ideas everybody.

Try going to a T-mobile store and ask for a new SIM card. My wife and I were having network issues on our new phones and Cingular's tech service told us to go to a store and ask for new SIM cards. They're free. It seems to have solved the problems.

Afterall, the SIM card is the cheapest link in the chain.

What Nokia email address would I use? None of the online support stuff for nokiausa.com makes it look like I could ask them about n73 issues.

EDIT: Nevermind I found their online email form.

u should still try it, they might be able to lead u to somewhere useful.

By the way where did u buy the phone from? does it have warranty?!

I got it off of eBay from x1387 at the beginning of August, the phone came from Indonesia and I actually have almost no idea what the warranty details are. I fired off an email to Nokia USA in the hopes that they can help and if not I'll have to determine what my options are.

Not surprisingly the T-Mobile representative said it was probably the phone.

The weirdest part is that I can remove the SIM from my n73 and drop it into my old moto and it works fine. No disconnects and no losing the network for two hours at a time. If I put it back into my n73 and try to make a call to anyone (I've been using T-Mobile support) it'll disconnect again.

SO CONFUSED.

have u try another sim on to the n73 and see how it works? Phones that are from x1387 should carry a warranty...u should fire them an email as well.

Yeah that's the extra-weird bit, I stole my roommate's Cingular SIM and tried it in my phone and it works fine. No getting disconnected or anything. Unfortunately T-Mobile doesn't really appear to want to help that much since it isn't a phone they sell. I will keep trying I guess.

i think you live in a spot were tmobile service is WEAK!! but try to get a new sim that might work, since the cingular sim works then its not the phone!

It's a T-mobile problem.... specifically it's a tower problem. I had a similar issue with Cingular where I live after they upgraded the tower near me for integration. They did some routine maintenance work, and the guy had a few cables switched into the wrong place. It basically amplifies any noise in the area and confuses the power modulation for the whole service area. Call 'em up, have them issue a trouble ticket to check the tower.

It isn't an 850 issue, the n73 has it. Signal in Bellingham is as strong as can be and hasn't changed recently. Using my old motorola I have full coverage everywhere the n73 craps out. I'm definitely leaning towards it being a T-Mobile issue, a Cingular SIM in my n73 works great with absolutely zero trouble.

My girlfriend pointed out that it might just be the SIM not making great contact any more, it seems reasonable so I'll probably go ask them for a new SIM and hope it helps. Failing that I'll investigate the tower issue.

Thanks again for the help guys, you're awesome.
