myTouch Error

I purchased my phone on 3-26-2010, its the T-Mobile myTouch 3G 3.5mm Jack - Black with 512MB Flash, 288MB RAM, 8GB Memory Card, 3.2 Megapixel camera. When I got home I proceeded to add my media to the memory card and customize my ringtones and others, then put about 10 apps on it.

2 days later I proceeded to take a picture, while the camera display was there, I had a message displaying across the screen: "Please Insert an SD card before using the camera". I checked Settings/SD card & phone storage to see the total space at 7.40gb so it was reading the SD card. I unmounted, then mounted to make sure that it was installed properly and it was. After going back and forth between the home screen, gallery, and camera, I was not able to take a picture, nor use any data from the SD card (ie: wallpaper, pictures, videos, music). I called 611 and they said I needed a "refresh" so they instructed me to turn my phone off, then turn it back on after about 10 seconds. Everything worked after that.

2 days later, it happened again, only this time the error was more intermittent. I called 611 again and they instructed me to format the SD card a perform a factory data reset. They mentioned that if this does not work, it must be hardware and they recommended I get a replacement phone. The format/reset worked... for 2 hours.

I took the phone back to the original t-mobile store that I purchased the original from on 4-2-2010. They had no problem doing the exchange, but didn't seem to care why I was doing it. I walked out of the store with a brand new phone, SD card, and SIM card. I logged onto my gmail account and left everything else alone, no wallpaper, pictures, videos, music, apps, NOTHING. The next day, I had the same issue. "Please Insert an SD card before using the camera".

After calling 611 again, they suggested the same format/reset, which I have done several times at this point, with no fix. They then suggested that "third time is a charm" I figured that I could not argue that so on 4-5-2010 I went to exchange it again, and again I walked out of the store with a brand new phone, SD card, and SIM card. By the time I got to a restaurant within the mall, and was seated, the third time was NOT a charm. Yes, that dreaded message came again "Please Insert an SD card before using the camera". I went back to the store and he said that there IS a fix coming for it soon, but with no ETA for the OTA (I think he called it).

I have called 611 a few more times, with no word of such a fix for this issue, I cannot find anything useful via searches on google about this issue. I like this phone, but it is not nearly 100% me, not even close, my old Samsung t239 was more me. Any ideas for a fix?

I have contact HTC about the issue, but there response was "I understand how frustrating it is when you keep getting that message and are unable to get the device to take pictures or videos because of this. Unfortunately, I will be unable to assist you with this device. T-Mobile does all the support up to a hard reset for the T-Mobile My Touch in accordance with the agreement between HTC and T-Mobile"

I have recorded a video to accurately show what is happening. Here is a link to the video I recorded and submitted to youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6NN2QlDbSg If you would prefer not to use a link, the search for my username on youtube, Petfreak1321

By now I have spoken to around 10 different people that answer the phones at T-Mobile, along with 2 "tech specialist" all of which have been very helpful in not solving the issue. Although, t-mobile does have excellent customer service.

Does anyone know of a fix, or future update that will solve this problem with my Android phone? Below are the spec of my phone:
Under about phone is says that I am up to date
Model Number = T-Mobile myTouch 3G
Firmware Version = 1.6
Baseband Version = 62.50SC.20.17U_2.22.23.02
Kernel Version = 2.6.29-g023e5c9
htc-kernel@and18-2 #3
Build Number = 2.10.531.4 CL119339 release-keys

I've got 3 steps to try:

1. What is the brand of microSD cards you are using? Is it just the stock ones that come with the phone? Before spending a lot effort on replacing the phone try purchasing a new card from a different manufacturer.

2. If that doesn't help it sounds like a firmware or hardware problem with the new 3.5mm MyTouches. Maybe they got a bad batch of phones from the manufacturer. I would try to get a new phone from another location, or even online. If the headphone jack isn't important maybe try getting an older version. I used an original MyTouch for months without a single camera/memory card problem.

3. If that fails try rooting your phone and installing a custom rom on it. There's plenty of tutorials on this site and others explaining how to do this. Plus you can get some more functionality out your phone as a bonus.

I understand how frustrating this can be! Don't give up on the phone because of this. I'm sure we can figure it out eventually.

I heard a couple of references to adding pictures and then later to adding ringtones. Did that involve connection to a PC/Mac. just wonder if something external is corrupting the card.

I have replaced the card with a few different brands and sizes, not a fix.

I have had 3 different phones/SIMS/SD cards from 2 different stores (no to say that they may not share a shipment)

I may have to root it, but I was hoping that T-Mobile would fix it, not just for me but anyone else having this issue. How can I be the only one to have this error on a myTouch 1.2v yet on 3 different devices?

I will not give up on this phone because I do like it, minus the SD card issue

I did connect the first phone to my PC to transfer, but neither the second nor the third were plugged in.

Thank you for you help thus far...

Anybody know details about Eclair? The sales guy said that would fix it, but seems to be a general upgrade, not a fix.

Sounds like you've tried almost everything. It just so strange that you are the only one reporting this problem. Maybe it's user error? I don't see how it can be but I'm running out of ideas.

T-Mobile hasn't announced a date to release Eclair (2.0 or 2.1) for the MyTouch. I'm not convinced they will. You can load it on your phone now, but for speed I would recommend sticking with 1.6. If you do load a custom rom make sure you get one compatible with your phone. Not all MyTouches are the same. It looks like you need to flash roms designed for the 32A board in your phone, not the 32B. I would verify this though.

At this point I doubt T-mobile can help you unless you want to keep replacing your phone every few days. That's about the only thing they can do.

Good Luck! And make sure you read everything before flashing a new rom to your phone! Better to be safe than to have a bricked phone.

I Thought about out being a user error, I don't see how though. When I first got each of the three phones the first thing I did was log onto my gmail account. On the first phone I downloaded apps, pictures and music. On the next two phones I only logged into my gmail account and nothing else. Maybe it is my gmail account. Any thoughts?

I can't imagine your gmail account affecting your SD card.

What class are the cards you are using? If they don't say on them they could be the slow class 2's. Have you tried a class 6? Maybe a faster card would help.

try this. go to your main settings, then select applications, then manage applications. find the camera app. open it, empty the cache and data. if there is an uninstall upgrade option, press that too.

Glad to hear I am not alone here, sorry to hear that you are having it though ROLF

I called a t-mobile tech specialist today and he said that the Eclair update may fix it but t-mobile is not releasing it yet because the older android phones such as the G1, 1st Gen myTouch and the Fender Edition (sorry ROLF) may not be able to handle it. see details below:

myTouch 1.2v (w/ 3.5mm jack) - 512mb Flash / 288mb RAM
myTouch Fender - 512mb Flash / 192mb RAM
G1 - 256mb Flash / 128mb RAM
CLIQ XT - 512mb Flash
Behold II - 200mb RAM

So my phone can handle the update, but when will I get it? Luckily it is covered under the 12month warranty, so in 11 months if I am still having this issue I get a new phone. But I doubt I will be 11 months patient.

I have a class 2 SD card, but I should not have to buy another card to replace the one they have as the default. If t-mobile is going to give me a free class 6 then I would try that, but I doubt they will.

I went into settings/applications/manage applications/camera and the Total, Application, Data, and Cache are all at 0.00B (the Camera is version 4). Besides the camera is not the only indicator, my ringtones/notifications/alarms/music all de-activate. But I can still view the total and available size of the SD Card so it is connected, just not reading properly.

Hello everyone,

I am new to Android and to this community. I am currently using a MyTouch 3G from T-Mobile and I am having the exact same problem as LSourp on my phone. I called the T-Mobile store where I purchased the phone and he said to come down and they will Master Reset my device, so when I got home I went online to figure out how to do that and then did it myself. So far I haven't had the problem again, although I also haven't used the phone very much since I did the Master Reset. I just wanted to post this so that it might help people find the source of the problem, that my device had the same difficulty and maybe it might rule out user-error or whatever. I don't know much about this stuff, though.

Thanks,
Nate

have you tried formatting the sd card? in the same settings page that gives you the available sd card memory, there is a format sd option. it will delete everything off your sd card. try formatting it.

I have done several master data resets, with no permanent fix. The issue is very intermittent. I have also formatted the memory card in every way possible; plugging into my PC and doing full and quick format, plugging phone into PC, and even a format from the phone itself. Although sometimes it will not allow a format from the phone itself, one time it took 3 attempts, another time I gave up before it did the format, and sometimes it does it on the first try.

The technical specialists at T-Mobile just tell me to wait for the update, easy for them to say. May just exchange it for the HD2.

A resolution has been found. Call 611 using reference number: CCKB629710 . T-mobile knows about the issue. I Called HTC and they are going to send me a replacement SD card. I Will let you know how it goes for me.

Well, I picked up mine Friday, (Fender myTouch) and same exact problem. As soon as I got home and before adding anything to the phone, snapped a picture and then started getting message "Please insert an SD card before using the camera". If I power phone off then back on it works (usually) for one picture then same message. I also noticed my music, (the pre-loaded) songs/playlist are buggy. They hang up, crash the player and basically do not work. This lead me to suspect a bad SD card. I went to T-Mobile store and the rep scratched his head and said reformat card. Worked until I left the parking lot. I returned to work and looked up this thread in less time than I spent in line at the store. I am printing a copy to bring back to them. I suspect I too will need a replacement card. Not what you want to go through with a brand new phone but I trust T-Mobile will make it right. It is obviously not an isolated problem and the store reps need to be aware of it.
