Myths About Colonoscopy

You should always take the Versed. You don't remember anything after. You
don't know you haven't had a general anesthetic. Again, always tell them you
have zero tolerance for pain.

If you want to stare inside your bowel, which is interesting, do it when you
have your flexible sigmoidoscopy.

It wasn't painful for me. Mentally uncomfortable, yes.

What did you try and do, hold it in? They tell you to just let it
ride as if you were sitting on the pot.

something in the procedure changed in the past 10 years?

My fatherdad did and said the exact same.

The worst part is some minutes after you're out of it. It takes the word
"fart" to a new level, I know it since I was with my dad. A big run back
to the hospital to find a toilet, LOL

No myth. That liquid was the worst part for me but then I was put under for
the procedure. Most people choose this route not being aware it is an
option although one you often have to pay out of pocket for.

I had been led to believe that the prep was the
hard part, and the liquid you have to drink during
the prep was the most awful stuff. I didn't find
that to be true at all. It wasn't good, but not
really bad. Like salt water with a little citric
acid. I had no trouble at all drinking the full
ration.

The colonoscopy was the hard part. Pretty painful
for brief periods, due to the compressed air filling
up my intestines. But I got through it okay.

Nothing was found. Not due for another one for
ten years.

No, they wanted to give me Versed and Fentanyl,
but I refused the Versed. I was wide awake
through the whole procedure.

I only peeked at the monitor a few times.
I wasn't really curious about my intestines.
I saw a couple things that made me think
"What's that?", so I decided it was better
not to look. I just relied on the doctor
to decide what deserved attention.

I didn't try to, but it is sort of a reflex.
Also, when air is pumped far into the colon,
it doesn't come out as readily as further
toward the exit. I passed most of it in the
recovery room.

I sure noticed how strict the hospital was
about making sure patients had a driver before
releasing them. They wouldn't even release
a patient to a taxicab, unless there was a
family member or somebody to ride with him.

Yegads, but you're brave! I'm overdue for the procedure in the next few
months, and I certainly will tell the medicos, "I don't want know
anything" whilst enduring the 'scope'! Not to mention, I think it'll be
a double-dose session - both ends (ugh!). But, after reading the posts
for this thread, I don't rue it as much as I figured. It has to get
done (sigh)! Still, I want to be oblivious! I'll be happy enough (or
not?) to learn the results afterwards.

Sky, who's still apprehensive & anxious!

P.S. Versed is wonderful stuff!!!

Thanks for your story. Really. I haven't had one, but it's just a
matter of time. I had the mini-version, and the yearly other thing at
home. But my doctor keeps saying "not yet".

I do have a small problem with your subject for the post. I would
suggest, "What my experiences were with how I chose to have my
colonoscopy".

One of the great things about being sedated is that you are only half
aware of what's going on and time passes so quickly so you are not stuck
forever in a boring process. I have a very faint memory of seeing the
monitor during my angiogram. I remember the doctor saying that they had
found a blockage and that he could clear it out and put in a stent.
Then...... Ooops. He said that he har pierced the artery ...call a
surgeon.... followed by frantic calls for a surgeon.

I am not sure that I trust doctors anymore.

The nurse gave me a partial dose of the sleepy drug and then they got

recovery. It was a great nap and I never felt a thing nor did I have
any after discomfort.
