Well, it's two different notions of divinity that use the same term in every language. One is a creator and the other is tabloid fare in places. A number of ancient Greek philosophers speculated on origins of myths they probably disliked or were uncomfortable about or simply felt required defending/explaining. When I visited the Vatican Museum about 10 years back, I saw this Hermes/Mercury statue wearing a toga but with the head of Anubis or some other Egyptian Jackal god.
Ever see the movie Adaptation? It gave a good sense of the source material, the story was the attempt to adapt it into a movie and it ended with a car chase. I'm sure some people picked up the book after seeing it but I just had a good night at the movies with it.
