As this film isn't recent I would imagine any thread on it has been deleted by now.

I've just watched this on DVD and was curious as to other people's views on it.

Personally, I didn't feel like Sean Penn deserved his Best Actor Oscar for it, although I loved Tim Robbins' performance. I warmed to the character and couldn;t help but cry, I just wanted to hug him.
A good piece of directing by Mr Eastwood too.
A good film, depressing though.
 
I thought Sean Penn thoroughly deserved his Oscar for this role. His anguish and subsequent actions were completely believable and utterly compelling.

He's choosing his roles very well at the moment, and if you've not seen it already I'd recommend The Assasination of Richard Nixon which in my opinion was one of his best choices.
 
Thought provoking. Although the outcome was tragic and shocking - I was screaming at the tv - I really enjoyed it. Suberb acting all round though I would have liked to have seen more Laura Linney there wasn't much for her to do.
 
I enjoyed it, but felt it didn't quite live up to the critical acclaim. Also I thought the final scene wasn't entirely necessary, and the ending would have been better without it.
 
I had very mixed feelings about this film when I saw it and left the cinema feeling disappointed with something - I'm not sure what that something was. The story, the acting, etc. were all excellent but the film as a whole ultimately wasn't. The film not living up to the critical acclaim was certainly an element in that feeling but I think it largely depended on the film promising so much while you were watching it but never delivering what it promised.
 
I echo those feeling as well and the scene where Sean Penn finRAB out Robbins was actually innocent all along and he killed him in vain, to brush aside and comeback with a comment like
 
Have to say, I thought the film was excellent. It was my favourite movie of last year. The only quibble I have with it is that I also found the last 5 minutes totally unnecessary and feel the film would have been more complete without it. Great directing by Clint (and ten bizillion times better than MILLION DOLLAR BABY!!!!).
 
2003 wasn't that long ago. I thought the movie was excellent and Sean Penn and Tim Robbins were very good. Definately the best Clint Eastwood directed movie I have seen.
 
I totally get what you mean. It was like there was something not quite finished about it, like they forgot to tie up one of the plot threaRAB maybe...there was just something incomplete about it.
 
Was Tim Robbins' character the one who was prime suspect for killing the daughter, told his wife he'd killed a mugger but had actually killed a paedophile?

Because I thought he was the best one by far.
 
Didn't Tim get Best Supporting Actor?
I suppose I can't be too critical of Sean Penn's performance, the acadmey obviously liked it, and it can't be an easy character to portray successfully. I do think though that Tim was better than Sean.

Yes Emmersonne, Tim Robbin's played Dave, the child abused by those men and then the one that was suspected of killing Katie.
