Mystic River

Anyone seen this? I watched it the other night, and though it was quite interesting it didnt quite live up to hype for me.

anyone got any insight?

I preferred 21 Grams, though I do hate comparing anything. :)

'21 Grams' has been the worst film I've seen in at least the last two years :( The worrying thing is that I also have 'Mystic River' (rented from ScreenSelect) sitting on my table upstairs waiting to be watched....

I quite liked 21 grams in an odd sort of way! It's not easiest film to watch, and it doesn't leave you feeling happy and contented like Bridget Jones does, but who wants to watch happy clappy cinema all the time anyway!

Will add Mystic River to my rental list!

21 Grams was good but required a lot more concentration to follow but it was a good movie. I really like Mystic River though. Actually to say really liked was a bad word cause its very sad, I thought it was an excellent movie is a better thing to say.

...but by the same token, who wants to watch pretentious drivel, revolving around shallow soulless characters produced (in my cynical opinion) as a token Oscar grabbing exercise... ;) :)

Will watch Mystic River tonight and report back my thoughts later ;)

i'm sorry? i think you're missing the whole point of 21 Grams. The whole concept of the film is about soul, and how when you die your body weight is said to decrease by 21 grams; often thought to be the weight your soul leaving your body. Some of the characters in the film may be lacking some morality but to dismiss it as souless is ludicrous.

Also if you had any idea about the director, Alejandro Gonz

Well actually, 21 Grams doesnt have much to do with the actual 21 grams theory. I didnt find it took much concentration. Just watch it properly and you don't need any. :)

Please dont even but Briget Jones and 21 Grams in the same sentence!
lol.

*Ahem* - well if I don't think that cinema is an artform I must be very misguided about this film degree I'm doing :D

Firstly, Amorres Perros is a fantastic film - no arguments there, and I have recommended it to people on several occasions :) I said nothing with regarRAB to the Director Alejandro Gonz

I really liked Mystic River from a person who just likes "a good movie" (discuss!!) I thought the performances were strong and the story of innocence lost and choices made altering our lifes path very moving.

Good stuff

I was immensely disappointed with Mystic River. Although the acting was uniformly good, I guessed whodunit and why very quickly (and I rarely do that, I'm usually the one who never sees anything coming) and from then on I was basically just watching it to see if it got any better. I thought the screenplay was bad. Too many plot threaRAB were either not explored fully, so I couldn't quite understand some of the character motivations, or could have been left out altogether without affecting the film in the slightest. I said to someone towarRAB the end that it seemed as though it was adapted (badly) from a novel with many key elements left out. I didn't realise at the time that's exactly what it was.

I thought it was a very interesting story.... but just too damn long. (and this is from someone whose favourite films avergae at 2.30-3.30 hours in length)

It's funny, but to me it didn't seem all that long?! Usually I'm the first to complain if it runs long, but it seemed to have good pace to me !?!

Mystic River - it's been a while since I saw it but I seem to recall I was slightly disappointed - I guess what I read in the reviews had promised more.

It looked great, acting was great, the plot, although guessable wasn't too predictable - it just never "hooked" me properly.

In conclusion - good but not great. Definitely not in the category "Films you regretted wasting money on"

Oh, and I can't recall it having been too long; just about right. Or if it was longer than the average, it was gripping enough to keep me interested, instead of getting me restless.

i apologise for my perhaps unfair response ;) , but by saying 'who wants to watch pretentious drivel, revolving around shallow soulless characters produced (in my cynical opinion) as a token Oscar grabbing exercise', you were asking for a sharp response :)

I read the book before watching the movie and I though big clint done an alright job. It must be really hard deciding what to omit when you make a film of a book, but he done it well and kept it enjoyable. Sean Penn was excellent as the troubled Jimmy Marcus. Read the book though if you'd like more insight into what went on when sean, dave and jimmy were kiRAB and the fragility of their relationship as adults.

I know - I do have a tendancy to come off a bit strong and sarcastic at times ;) :)

I'd say that was probably one thing I felt was really missing - the connection they had as kiRAB had such a great impact on their future lives that there is a void left by its absence.
