Mystery spooky 1970s programme

This is probably a long shot, but does anyone remember a programme, made in the 1970s, where a couple crash their car into a tree in the rain whilst driving to visit some friends in the country. The friend sees blood running under her front door, screams and drops her tea tray. She opens the door to find the injured driver who explains the situation. He then disappears. Of course, he was a ghost and the couple are found in the car, seriously injured or dead, I can't remember. I do remember being scared s***less when I saw it one afternoon in the early 1980s, aged 8 or 9. I'm pretty sure Stephen Yardley was the driver, but it's not in his IMDB. I seem to remember the vehicle was a MK1 or MK2 Ford Escort van. Does this crazy memory ring any bells with anyone?

Hammer House Of Horror ?

I seem to remember a countryside car crash in one, and a family taken to a quiet, and unfriendly, hospital.

Blimpyboy. It could have been a 1973/74 ITV series of 75minute dramas called 'Thriller' in which Brian Clemens was involved. I remember that irish actress Sinead Cusack was in one of those.[What a memory for that era I have].

As I recall, it was quite a short story, certainly not as long as an hour. Thinking back, there might have been three short stories making up the programme, but my mum turned it off after the first. But as it was so long ago, I could be wrong.

That episode caused my sister to have terrible nightmares for weeks. Thanks to her we weren't allowed to watch it anymore! It was quite a scary episode though! Can you remember the episode about a haunted Dolphin tank?

Yardley was in Thriller story "Kill Two Birds"
Sinead Cusack was in the episode about the blind school with Dennis Waterman .
Although the setting had changed the reason for the villains presence was a well used idea that Clemens had already used in The Avengers and used again in The Professionals

The programme in question in the OP could be an episode of WhoDunnit? or one of several other possible shows YARDLEY appears in

nkt. I believe Yardley was the tall actor who was in the shortlived series the XYY Man. That was in the 70s too. Never saw him again in anything.

I am intrigued by what programme this was. It does not ring any bells with me but sounds like my sort of thing. I do remember around this time a series called Murder, Mystery & Suspense. I was wondering if maybe it could have been part of this series?

srg. I thought 'The Professionals couldn't be shown anymore as the one or other of the actors had put their veto on it. Maybe whichever one did,has relented since.

Afternoons in the early 80's mean it could well be an episode of a schools programme.

The other alternative is on ITV when they used to show TV Movies during the day.

But with both of those possibilities the list could become endless

Daytime ITV opens up the lists for lots of repeats like Armchair Thriller , Scorpion Tales aswell as some US shows.

Maybe the time is wrong and it was a video recording being viewed so could also come from a late night slot

What was that series that Orson Welles fronted, looming out of the dry ice fog like a tanker. Sounds like the sort of story that featured (remember The Monkey's Paw and the knocking on the door at the end).

Pity there doesn't seem to be a market for that sort of anthology show these days, everthing has to be repeatable with 'long running franchise' in mind.

Not sure what you mean.
Martin Shaw blocked the show from terrestrial repeats during the period when ITV were still interested in showing it but he can't block the multi channels from showing it.

Granada+ started repeating it more than 10 years ago and with the move to ITV4 the series has been on air constantly during that time.
