My family has a painting that came from my grandfather. It was passed on to him from his father and when it was given to him he was told that if he ever needed any money that the painting was worth something. The painting has got to be at least 150yrs old. The little bit of history i know about it, is that it was given an ancestor in my family as a gift from a nobleman who had one of my family members hide this painting along with all of his other works of art and valuables in a cave during a war (do not know which) so that the art/valuables would not be destroyed. As a thank you for his service my ancestor was given this painting. My family has been told that it is oil paint although it looks almost like watercolor and it is on some type of fabric. the painting is about 5'hx3'w and is of a man on a horse that is drinking from a pond in the country. I was wondering if anyone might have any idea as to what war may have been fought when my ancestor hid this painting and also if anyone knows of any similar works that i could look at. i just want to learn more about this mysterious piece of work.
