I have chronic back pain for the last 10 years. Two herniated discs, osteoarthritis and degenerative disc disease. I am used to this pain and have managed to handle it although it is difficult.
I have had this horrible cold for about a week where I have been coughing my brains out. This is now starting to break up......but this morning I woke up and my low back pain felt different. I had difficulty standing up straight. This is day two now and it is extremely achy pain and sometimes I have difficulty straightening up. This has not happened before. Could it be related to the cold or some secondary problem associated????

Hi one observation with one person was that on a day before water was missed and not enough was taken in that person had trouble with back pain the next day. If a person is dehydrated more will need to be taken in.

I'm sure it could be many things, but I just wanted to mention that it is possible that you have ruptured a disc. Sometimes something as simple as a cough or a sneeze can result in a herniated disc or an annular tear. Since you've had problems for awhile, you may have coughed in a way that put a little too much pressure on one of your herniated discs and it herniated a bit more, causing irritation to surrounding tissue and adjacent spinal nerve roots. So the quality of your pain changed.

You may want to consult with your doctor if the pain doesn't clear up in a week or two.
