My Yahoo chat is not working. How can I chat with my family and friends?

I switched from new mail to Classic mail because I couldn't chat with my friends. I still cant open my chat even in classic mail. I click on available to chat, but my friends say I am off line to them. What is going on and how do I fix it so I can chat with them once more. Help, please, what can be the problem and what do I have to do to fix it.
