When I try to play them this is the message I get:
Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.
How can I fix this?

Ok, there is many ways to fix this. If you prefer to download another player, download VLC media player. Or if you want to install codecs, i recommend K-Lite Codec Package.

find out what file type is of the video. check file types in windows media player to see if that type is there. if not, you will have to either convert the movie to another file type. use another media player, search for the codec.

I had the exact same problem myself.
The easiest way around this is to download the VLC media player.
This is FREE and plays every sort of file I've come across.
It also has the option to record anything that's playing, including DVDs.
To get this once open click on "View", then "Advanced Controls".
The "Record" button will noe have appeared.

Hope this helps.
