My wife wants to ride. What about the S40?

This is my first real post on this forum and it looks like a good place to hang out. Wy wife blew me away the other day and said she wants to ride a street bike. She has some riding time on my 80cc dirt bike. We were looking for something bigger when she blew me out of the water and sat on a GZ250. She said it felt good and light enough that she could pick it up if she dropped it. I would like to get her on something that could keep up with my Triumph Bonneville America. I had her sit on the S40 and I think she could handle the wieght but I'm not sure about the power. I'm also concerned with the vibration factor. Do you guy's think it would be a good choice for her first bike?

I think it would be a very nice first or really any bike for her or anyone. I've ridden both the gz250 and the s40. I was very surprised at the power the gx250 had even at higher speeds..that is over 50. S40 had, I think more of a solid ride to it. Now also...the difference I found..was that the gz250 at speeds of 60 to 70, I didn't seem to get the wind gusts that blow me back...where as the s40 I did. She may wish to consider a wind shield.
 
Only know what we have been through. We fulltime in a travel trialer and move around the country a lot. We had Harley's, wenn we retired, but they were too heavy to load in the bed of our tow veicle. (Dodge Dually). Went out a bought a Rebel 250 cc and a new GZ 250. Keep them about three weeks. They did not have a enough power.

We know have his and hers S-40's. Love them. They have enough power, and only weigh 50 lbs more than the 250's.

I thinl you will be very happy with the S-40. Enough power, but still light wieght.
 
Thank you all. I guess my 44 years of riding experience has told me to always buy more power. I've never riden a large single other than my 360 enduro so this really helps having people like you around. She had already said she wanted a windshield so that's a must do. Again thank you. I had a S40 for about 9 months-traded it in on the M50-plenty of power around town, anything over 60mph had the engine screamin (Keep in mind I'm well over 200lbs). Very little vibration. Wind does blow the bike around though-it only weighs 302lbs-I had the factory windshield on it so wind in the chest wasn't a problem. Over all a very good starter bike or a bike for a smaller/lighter person.
 
The S40/ Savage is a good bike. It's not tops on my list for a first bike, but it is still a good choice. My favorite 'first bike' recommendation is the Honda Shadow VLX 600.
 
Also check out the Kawasaki Vulcan 500 ltd. It sits a little lower than the S40. I test rode them and a Honda Rebel. The S40 seemed to have a little more get-up-and-go than the Kaw. Both were fine at 60mph. It seemed like the 250c Rebel was working way to hard at 60mph. The Honda Shadow 600 is probably a lot like the Kaw Vulcan 500, but we didn't like the looks of the Honda. We especially didn't like the 1-inch gap between the seat and the tank - just seems like they could find a better way to mount the seat. We ended up with the Vulcan 500, but it was a toss-up between that and the S40. The Kaw just seemed a little smoother on acceleration, and this being my wife's first bike since the early 80's, she didn't want a bike that accelerated too quickly, but that could still run at highway speeds. The Kaw was a good compromise of the two.
 
Hi: My wife started on a 2000 Suzuki Marauder. She loved it. Two years later she moved up to a Suzuki Savage 650. Shew did not like the 'feel' of the bike as well as it would constantly backfire for no apparent reason. She hapened to try a Hoda 600 Shadow and fell in love with it. She said it felt like she was back on the 250 Marauder. She still owns the Shadow now and loves it. I still have my Intruder 1500 and she has no problem keeping up with the'pack' at all.

On the other hand, Triumph makes a nice little scooter.

But seriously, if the V-star's weight doesn't spook her, it's not only a good starter bike, she may genuinely be quite happy with it for several years. Maybe.
 
My wife rode a Savage for 2 years (traded up to a Honda 750 Aero last fall). Very reliable, 60+ MPG, no appreciable vibration until your up to 70MPH or so. She had no trouble keeping up with my C50. The Savage is a fun bike to ride.
