My Verizon Wireless contract is expiring before it says I can upgrade?

My Verizon Wireless online account is telling me that my contract ends a week from today, 12/26/10, but it says I can upgrade on 8/30/11 which really confuses me because usually the upgrade comes before your contract ends. Also I'm an additional line on a family plan, not the primary line. I currently have an enV Touch, which I got as a replacement for the Voyager because before this I had the Voyager but I literally had to have it replaced over 10 times in the nearly 2 years I had it, so I haven't upgraded since I got the Voyager and I've had my enV Touch since just before New Years last year, so close to a year. Anyways, I plan on getting the iPhone if it comes to Verizon next year like so many people say it is, and if not I plan on getting one of the Droids. Anyway I was planning on being able to do that since I saw my contract would be ending at the end of this year but now it's telling me my upgrade is over 8 months away? What do you think I should do? Would I be able to end my contract and simply start a new one, and if I did would I be able to keep my number and how much money would that cost? Or do you think I can get them to upgrade anytime after next week when my contract supposedly ends? Thanks so much!
