My U/s results showed two hypoechoic solid nodules in my Thyroid

Hi,

I had an ultrasound of my thyroid as my doc was wondering if the thyroid was pressuring my trachea since my voice never recovered after having a chest/throat,ear and sinus infection 6 weeks earlier.

The results I received today were as follows:

The right thyroid lobe measures 5.1 x 1.8 x 1.5cm and the left thyroid lobe measures 4.4 x 1.7 x 1cm. Two hypoechoic solid nodules are present in the upper and mid pole of the right thyroid lobe, the largest measuring 9mm in diameter.

The remainder of the thyroid lobes have an otherwise mildly heterogeneous echotexture with no further solid or cystic nodules or abnormal vascularlity identified.

The thyroid isthmus was not enlarged and there was no evidence of retrosternal extension of either thyroid lobe.

No cervical lymphadenopthy was identified.

Impression: Unremarkable study apart from two hypoechoic solid thyroid nodules in the upper and mid pole of right thyroid lobe.

My doctor said she expected there was nothing to be done as the radiologist did not suggest anything.

From what I have read on this site, I take it that I just cruise along and have it checked in the next 6 to 12 months to see if there are any changes?

I have no lumps on my throat and my thyroid blood tests are all normal.

Just doing a little research of my own to put my mind at ease.

Cheers,

Ok first things first normal size of a thyroid is 4-4.8 x 1.0-1.8 x 0.8-1.6cm. This is something that took a lot of searching for me to find. When ever I see someone put the size of their thyroid I like to post this fact so that you can have something to compare it to. the size was confirmed with a doctor friend who is a radiologist. You're right on the fact that you'll have to have the nodules checked again because a doctor doesn't usually do a a biopsy unless the nodule is between 1.0-1.5cm and that depends on the doctor.

Do you have your blood test results? Just because the doctor says they are normal doesn't mean they really are. They use wide ranges and most labs right now are not using the correct range for TSH. If you post your results along with the ranges there are quite a few people that can tell you exactly what they mean and if they are in the right part of the range.

Thank you Keefsgirl for your reply :)

Your information tells me the size of my thyroid is normal and that was very helpful.

Here are the results of the TSH taken on the following dates:

6/April/05 8/May/09 11/Feb/10

1.0 0.8 0.7 mU/L (0.40 - 4.00)

I am Australian, so I am not sure if our way of measuring is different over here.

Thank you for your help.

Cheers,
