my toyota camry starter issues?

my 1992 toyota camry has 72,000 miles on it..and has given me no major issues until tonight..i have had the car for about 2 years...its my first car.i absolutely love it...but the problem is i was parked on a street today because i was dropping a friend home..my engine was off but the key was in the position where the radio was still able to work...and i noticed my radio shut off after a couple minutes sitting in the car...so i tried to turn it on and nothing happend...then i tried starting my car...it wouldnt start....my lights were working..(headlights and the light inside the car.....)....then my friends father took a plastic pipe and he wacked the starter and my car started......and i was able to drive 20 minutes home....but could this only be the starter or the battery...because all my lights were working but my radio was not....

i love my car....i have put alot of money into this car and i really want to know whats going on so i can get it fixed...

its definitely your starter. if your unsure about the battery you could get a cheap battery tester, or if you don't mind removing the battery and getting it tested at an auto parts store for free, thats another option.
