Sometimes the year can make a difference.
If you ran a direct connection to the starter motor, the engine should turn.
The (-) jumper to ground - frame or battery (-)
The (+) jumper to the large terminal on the starter motor.
This procedure is bypassing the starter relay.
If the engine does not turn, the engine could be locked up, or the starter motor could be defective.
To check if the engine is locked up - remove the left crankcase cover and try to turn the flywheel (remove the spark plugs to aid in turning the crankshaft).
To check the starter motor - remove it from the engine. Attach the (-) jumper to the the body of the starter motor. Hold the motor firmly in one hand and touch the (+) jumper to the terminal.
The starter motor should spin with enough force, to want to jump out of your hand.
The battery (+) cable connects to the starter solenoid (relay).
