My Sony Vaio CD/ DVD Rom doesn't work, please advice?

My Sony Vaio ( VGN-FS 980 ) has been a good laptop so far, but since day 1 it has issues regarding the CD/ DVD ROM.

It doesn't read or burn CD. It reads DVD perfecty ( I can watch movies), but when it comes to burning DVDs it drives me crazy.

Several months ago I burned 3 backup DVDs as I am planning to do a complete system restore, so that my Vaio can be in factory conditions once again. Not because it's giving me any particular trouble really, just so I can extend its useful life, as I don't want to spend money on a new laptop right now.

I called Sony online techs...but they would charge 130 dollars for a remote assistance and I am not willing to invest that kind of money in an old laptop.

I also reinstalled drivers etc...but no success. Could it be a DVD compatibility issue? The DVDs I tried to burn so far are Verbatim and Fujifilm.
Does anyone know what could be wrong with my CD/DVD Rom? Is it rather a software or hardware issue?
Thanks for your input!
