My Son and his Acne Problem

Hi, My son has had a reasonably challenging time with acne since he was about 15. It seemed Proactive promised all the answers so I subscribed. It made a difference but it always seemed to be just festering beneath the surface. He's 18 now, seems to have done most of his growing up and still has an acne problem. I'm looking for advice on what to use in stubborn cases, where for example Proactive is not doing the job properly. I haven't done anything sooner because he seemed satisfied with the Proactive and I didn't want to upset his self confidence in any way by pointing out there was still a problem that needed attention. At 18 I think he is old enough to talk it through.

Acne can stick around for a long, long time. I'd talk to him about seeing a dermatologist. He can recommend other topical stuff and, if that fails, will prescribe oral meRAB.
 
I started my 14 year old son on accutane over 7 weeks ago on recommendation of his Dermatologist. He's looking a lot better already and has no ill side effects other than very chapped lips and a bit of exzema.

You might consider this.
 
My son also just started accutane, he literally just started it today. We have tried everything up to this point - Acne Free, oral antibiotics, topical antibiotics, etc. It just wasn't enough. He will be monitored closely by the dermatologist. With Accutane, you have to get blood tests every 31 days and the prescription is for 30 days only, no refills. It's very strictly regulated because of it's strength.

All I know is that he obsesses over his face 24/7 and it keeps him from doing alot of things a normal 16 y.o boy would do. It's really hard to watch him go through this, so we are hoping the accutane is the answer. Good luck to your son.
