my ps3 doesnt work on a SD TV now. used to work on HD. help?

i used to play my ps3 on a HDTV. but that got broken. now when i try to connect the ps3 via AV cables to my SD (standard normal TV) the ps3 doesnt show on the screen. the TV isnt catching the ps3 signal. is there something im doing wrong? or maybe is it because the ps3 is still trying to play in Hd on an SD TV? if so how do i reset the display so i can play in non HD? all answers appreciated. thanks
