Hi,
I am a 40 year old guy who in the last 8 months or so has developed a sore back in certain situations.....
I work in an office and spend most of the day seated, don't think my posture is great but I am trying to amend it without any results so far.... I also don't have a particularly healthy or active life (although I am not overweight and was very fit long ago!!).
My problem started like I said around 8/9 months ago and at first was only apparent when I was in bed at night......however I fall asleep I generally end up or wake up lying flat on my back, its in this position lying flat that I experience the discomfort. Its not pain, its more of a progressive dull ache which is bad enough to wake me up and destroy my sleep patterns.
The area that is affected is mid thoracic more on the right side but sometimes on the left also......... the best I can describe it would be to say that it feels like my rib cage is tender or there is no padding between my rib cage and my organs!!! to the extent that my bodyweight (which is not excessive) is enough to hurt the area in question. Now as I said, this only started with lying down flat on my back but it has got progressively worse and I now have discomfort at times during the day also........ mainly when sitting. I have least discomfort when i am moving about and being active its more of a sedentry thing. I cannot however do anything which involves rotating from left to right with any kind of vigour i.e golf etc as my mobility seems limited.
My biggest concern, crazy as it sounRAB is not the discomfort I am feeling but the lack of sleep which is driving me up the wall!!! I can't remeraber the last time i had a good nights sleep. I feel tired and irritable all the time...(for the record I was always a great sleeper and could sleep virtually anywhere) even my physical appearance seems different due to the lack of sleep, bags under the eyes etc...
I have visited my Doctor twice who seems baffled and can't find anything wrong (tried prescribing me something to help me sleep which makes no difference, just makes me drowsy in the morning). I have seen a specialist who x-rayed my back which appeared to show a few of the facet joints as being quite compressed with not much cartillage left, on this basis he sent me to a chiropractor, he in turn put me through my paces and couldn't find anything unusuall and seemed surprised that the few facet joints could be causing me all this discomfort. what he did find was that I was tender just under my right rib cage and have been for some time so he has sent me for an ultra sound to determine if i have gall stones!!. I will have the ultra sound this week but to be honest i think i know in my heart of hearts that its not the problem because my bones are sore!!! ribs at the back and sides etc, but no-one can find what the problem is which is leaving me exasperated!.
I would be grateful if anyone could offer any advice or even if any of my symptoms rang a bell with anything they had experienced?
I will gladly provide any more details / information for anyone kind enough to take an interest.
I look forward to hearing from someone.
