My phone idea.

i was looking at this flash drive that i have and the outside casing was coming off. it just occurred to me the other morning, 3:30 to be exact, that something this shape would make a cool, simple phone. so this morning i drew a sketch. i'll update later with more sketches but this is what i have right now. i was thinking this thing would pop open to reveal a 2-line LCD or put the lcd on the other side.
but either way i want it to pop open like the 8800/8801. i haven't figured out exactly how to incorporate that but i will because it's cool! i have it shown with an earpiece. the idea is you dial the number or select it from your contacts, hit send and clip it on your ear. thus eliminating the need for bt headsets and other such wired devices. it would run a basic nokia os. tell me what you think! ideas, suggestions?

I apoligize for the picture quality but the lcd on my camera is broken.

It looks cool. But if you put the LCD on the other side, how do you know what you are dialing? It should be same side as the keys are isn't it? Not sure how you put the slider with such a long key pad? I like the clip on idea!

yeah, that whole battery issue has got me stumped. as far as the screen, i think i would have the bottom section, from below six on down, slide down. or put the screen in front. and have the keypad pop out from under it or go the 880x route and have the screen slide up. another option that i thought of was have the number keys light up for a second or two after you press them so you know what you pressed. i'll sketch some more tomorrow night, and I'll have a real scanner then.

Get rid of the numeric keys. Most people dial from contacts, and since you are shooting for small size, design for the common case.

but if i ditch the number keys then how do you program contacts in the first place? And how would you write an sms? I wonder if i could use the battery from a rechargeable flash mp3 player?

You could figure something out for the contacts (do them on computer, transfer over to phone, etc). The SMS is a tough one, I would be willing to give up SMS for something that small.

hmmm....sounds almost like the 7270...although with features like you mentioned it would never surprise me with Nokia. They always seem to throw some curve balls out there.
