My Philips gogear vibe 4 gb won't connect to my laptop?

my friend gave me her Philips mp3 today, but i can't connect it to my computer at all. nothing pops up. the mp3 charges and turns on but it won't connect. I'm not sure if the usb is busted or something. what should i do?
