You have no excuse not to be on birth control first especially when it can be low cost or even free. Experiment with different birth control and see what works the best for you. Please make him use condoms, at the very least get STD tested in between partners.

Exposure to sperm risking pregnancy no matter where you are in your cycle. It only takes one, so use birth control!

For your first time, I would wait until after your period is over so you don't get grossed out, some people don't care but this should be special. If you are not on birth control consistently, have him wear a condom that has a spermicide in it. Sperm can live within the vagina for seven days, you ovulate 14 days in to the cycle (give or take 3 days) and that is when you are ripe and fertile, BUT pregnancy can still occur even if you use the "rhythm" method as it is called. As long as you use protection of some kind, it really doesn't matter when you do it, but just remember if you have your period that the menses will get all over him and possibly you, not a pretty sight.

Birth control is the best way. If you are not on anything now, condoms are the best. Research all the different methods. There are HUGE pros and cons which need to be taken into consideration.
Remember, No Glove= NO LOVE.
Condoms seem like the best choice for you at this moment.
Now, woman to woman:
If you don't use anything, note that the woman is most fertial about 10 days after the last day of her period to 2 days before it starts. (or at least that is what I learned in sex ed years ago).
Then there is the ECP Emergency Contraceptive Pill which, if tken 72 hours after unprotected sex, will force you to have your period, WHETHER or NOT and egg had been fertilized. (That is why some religious folks consider it a type of abortion) The ECP pill should not be used as a regular form of birth control because it really messes with your hormones, but if you really need one, they are over the counter at King Soopers or many local grocers if over the age of 17.
Condoms are best right now. Use lube with them to prevent vaginal tearing caused by friction which can lead to infection.
Use only water based lubes with condoms. Oil in others can break down the latex in condoms.
Test the condom (a separate one from the one you intend to have inner couse with) on your inner arm to make sure you aren't allergic to latex or the spermicide. (that is not common. BUT, it would make your 1st time uncomfortable if you get a rash/itch/hives 1/2 way through.
Get a doctor and talk to them.
Check out planned parenthood, or your college counselor.
Happy Sexing!
