Can I report them for fraud? I realize that this will not get me any more money from the government, but I am wanting to use this as leverage to force them to actually contribute to my education like they are already claiming they are. In addition, I should have gotten a $300 or so income tax refund, but because of the taxes I had to pay I only got $50 back. Had I been able to claim the credit myself, I would have not had to pay these taxes and would have received the $300 refund (but because I am 19, they claimed me as a dependent--making me ineligible for the hope credit--even though I did not live with them, nor did they pay for my food, housing, etc). I would not be so desperate, but I am really broke because of college!
My parents got the Hope Tax credit, but they did not pay for my college (I did).
