it started blinking & flashing? is it toast or is there something I can do to stop it?
The actual screen is blinking between green and the picture. Usually only half the screen turns green. It varies between where on the screen this happens. It occurs approx. every 4 - 5 seconds, and only lasts for a second or two. But it makes the tv unwatchable.
 
What started blinking & flashing the screen itself or lights on the front of the tv?
If it's the lights on in front of the tv then it's the tv's way of saying there is a problem internally and it's on shut down mode to prevent further damage to it, you should take it to a tv repair shop and let them have a look at it they will know what the blinking lights means.

It would be hard to pin point the exact cause without seeing the tv in person, best advice I could give you is to have a repairman take a look at it and quote you a price to fix it! Sorry I couldn't be more help to you, Good luck in getting it fixed
